I'm do not have installed my MS3x yet but my package is ready to pick up.

ive already downloaded it and it seems to be fairly good.

Soviet and I both has MSDroid working working with USB OTG on our android phones and tablets.

Vincentmiata 07-14-2013 09:14 AM

And whats your opinion, is it a replacement for tunerstudio on a laptop?

No it is not a replacement to a laptop and TS. I have used it more for quick easy changes and for the gauges.

jnshk 07-14-2013 11:01 AM

I've used it some with my MS1 over bluetooth. It's got a lot of potential, but as shuiend said, it's not a replacement for TunerStudio and a laptop. I've found a few bugs with it since installing it on my phone, and some of them have already been fixed but I think that some are still waiting on an update.

If I recall correctly, it's still considered to be in alpha or beta testing stages, so things aren't 100% yet. It's basically an enthusiasts' project, so updates come as they have time to improve the code, but are not guaranteed on any time table.

My laptop isnt working anymore, so i need to find a replacement laptop for the first drive with ms3x

the ms3x already got a basemap, so maybe it msdroid will be fine for now?

Can we actually use USB straight from MS to the phone or tablet? dont want to use bluetooth, USB to phone or tablet would be so much easier. Is this possible? How?

Mazduh 07-15-2013 02:25 AM

Welp just bought the bluetooth adapter from EFI... Will give this a shot in a few days.

Go find a replacement laptop. You need to do initial startup and tuning with TS.

Yes you can. As long as your Serial to USB adapter uses the FTDI chipset. MSDroid has the correct drivers built in. Your phone or tablet must support USB OTG though.

Does the adapter DIYautotune sells have the FTDI chipset?

Yes it does. I have not tried using their adapter though because I am on an MS3x and just use the native USB.

I got a laptop.. my brother lend me his one. And tommorow i have a day off

MSDroid is kind of half way between a bunch of gauges and a full-on tuning laptop. You still need a laptop because TunerStudio VE Analyze is magic and should be the main tool while street tuning.

MSDroid still allows you to do a few things in a pinch without a full-on laptop.
MSDroid also is great for fixed installations - e.g. in-dash mounted tablet.

As of the latest version of MSDroid you don't need bluetooth and you can either use the native USB cable with MS3 or the Serial-to-USB adapter.

Mazduh 07-16-2013 12:49 AM

Do they make serial to usb micro though? Unless you have a android tablet with a full-sized usb port

Braineack 07-16-2013 07:24 AM

you've heard of converters/adapters right?

cable is the one you want.

Braineack 07-16-2013 10:11 AM

i tried to install usb otg on my phone, but it needs to be rooted. I'm too dumb to understand.

AbeFM 07-20-2013 12:08 AM

yeah - I'm having issues too. I thought since I could use a keyboard and mouse from my phone it'd just work... But somehow I can't connect to the MS3. It tries to get version number (after auto-starting on attachment of OTG cable + plugging into USB - i.e. it sees a serial port) but then... nothing.

My laptop was having issues with serial coms with the MS, too, but that was only when I was haxoring zietronix windows software on wine at the same time as TS on the same linux laptop and I figured it wasn't the MS's fault....

--------------
Edit: Somehow they don't support this version of MS quite right. Copied an INI in and up and running, sort of.

go to xda-developers.com and find the appropriate subforum for your phone. most newer devices are pretty much one-click root.

I honestly don't even know what rooting a phone means.

Onyxyth 07-20-2013 09:55 AM

Think Linux. Rooting a phone is essentially giving you access to the Root directory. The Root directory is usually unfuckwith-able because it contains the important settings and data for the devices OS, and regular consumers would fuck up their phones.
But power users can root their device and do a lot of cool shit with it.

Braineack 07-20-2013 11:57 AM

ok that makes a bit of sense.

TheCrazySwede 07-20-2013 01:45 PM

Food for thought:

I'm actually about to buy one of the Windows Surface Pro tablet pc's next week. I'll then be wiring it into the dash using quick connect/disconnect holders and whatnot. The Surface Pro tablet pic actually comes with the FULL version of windows 8, not just the tablet version. I'm hoping this means that we will be able to use the full version of TS on there as well. If so, this will make a viable option for tuning, as well as music. I'll be using a headphone-RCA adapter cable to run sound from the tablet pc to the amp, and wiring in a USB hub under the dash to run the USB-serial adapter for the MS, as well as an external HDD for music and file storage. I'll also be wiring in an extra power outlet hidden inside the dash to run a power adapter to the tablet for charging while mobile.

I'm not 100% sure that this entire system will work, but if I can make it work, it will be one hell of an in car tuning/music option.

I'll be starting a thread on this once I've picked up all of the parts and keep everyone posted on the outcome. I just thought some of you may be interested in my idea :P

Vincentmiata 07-20-2013 02:14 PM

Rooting is something like unlocking the phone to do everything the phone maker forbids you to do, but developers can use the function.

I'm using msdroid trough bluetooth with my MS3x and works fine

Tunerstudio will not work on a windows RT version, thats what i heard.

Windows RT? I'll have to look I to that. I was under the impression the new surface pro had the full windows 8...

Vincentmiata 07-20-2013 05:29 PM

ah yes i see, the new surface pro has windows 8 on it, but better check twice if you have the right windows and not windows RT

AbeFM 07-27-2013 10:45 PM

This topic should be changed to "is anyone using msdroid on MS3Pro?

It is giving me fits.

nperkins 08-02-2013 11:43 AM

I ordered a USB OTG cable for my GNex, and it came in last night.. Plugged it in, and before I could even click anything, MSDroid popped up, noticed it, asked if i wanted to connect, and BOOM! I was live. It was easier than TunerStudio! I needed to tweak some idle fueling, ridiculously easy to do.

If they ask for donations, I am MORE than willing to donate. I'm VERY impressed with how well this works for a free android app thats still in its early stages.

nile13 08-11-2013 01:35 PM

So, I've downloaded MSDroid to my original Nexus 7. I have Reverend-built MS2. Have an OTG cable, USB to micro-USB.

Should things just connect? Or do I need some sort of Bluetooth device? This would be really useful to try and understand my recent no-start issues.

nperkins 08-12-2013 08:41 AM

Do you have a USB/Serial converter? If so, you should just be able to plug in your connections so you are connected to the MS, and it should work. You may need to install a USB OTG Helper app on your nexus.

shuiend 08-12-2013 09:08 AM

I believe the Nexus 7 needs to be rooted to work, but I am not positive. I do know it needs to be rooted and a different kernel to have charging and USB connected to it.

nile13 08-12-2013 09:20 PM

I do have Serial to USB, of course, to plug into regular Windows laptop with Tuner Studio. I'll try to hook up USB OTG between that USB connector and Nexus 7 and see if Nexus sees MS from MSDroid. The question is - what OTG helper, if any, I might need.

As far as rooting - Nexus doesn't see external storage (like USB sticks) without rooting. But, in theory, it should see some USB devices, I just don't know which ones. The car is an hour away so no easy way to try for a while. And I have no interest in rooting Nexus if I can avoid it.
