Budget MS build questions.
 

Looking at doing a low boost build on my 93. I'm only looking for 150hp give or take so not going to wild. I bought a 90 Probe GT with a upgraded turbo to play with so the Miata only needs to be a little more drivable, (live in hilly part of NY). With the Probe came another complete engine and I mean complete. I have the equipment a ability to fabricate so gonna use the turbo and IC from the spare motor for the cost savings and smallish size.

After searching and lots of reading it seems MS is the way to go, the bandaid approach cost way to much for the level of tuning available. So to my questions, needing to keep it to a sane price level what is the bare minimum needed to have a safe tunable set-up. Wideband is a given even with bandaids but what is the lowest cost MS that will safely run a low boost setup.

I know some of you have tried most of the different generations made so if I don't need all the bells and whistles will MSI allow me to build a safe FI setup and tune it reliably?

get the v2.2 board kit, add the pwm idle mod and it'll be the cheapest solution. then just build a harness...you could use the boomslang harness for sale in the for sale seciton right now.

I think I have a parallel harness for a 90-93 in a box somewhere that I'd sell cheap...probably needs some tlc.

OK, using hand to protect head, if I used the parallel harness would I need the pwm idle mod or could I let the oem pcm take care of idle. Other than neatness and so on is there any real advantage to going stand alone on such a basic setup?

you could do that, I just prefer full standalone. If you leave a/c, running parallel will handle the activation/idle better when the stock ecu controls it.

No a/c, already removed, the car is topless after all :bigtu:. Just looking at my options and ease of use. Would build the MS and get it running on the car first then add turbo later. Has anybody tried the wideband setup by PLX, it's only $150 and outputs both wide and narrow band signals.

Are you talking about the MS1 PCB2.2 kit thats $157 from Diyautotune?
Was reading on their site and wasn't real clear it would also control ignition.

so is the lc-1 and comes with a gauge at that price.

That sounds like a reasonable route to take for ease of use. I would assume there's a base tune available to get me started and I have looked thru your build thread on making a megasquirt for the Miata even if not all of it made sense without having a kit on hand to see what you were talking about. (Good write up none the less).

So the basics I need now is MS kit, a harness, and a wideband to get started on this project?

I've got a laptop and tuning cable would be ordered with MS kit, the MSI PCB2.2 kit will work right? The boomslang harness for sale is for a newer car than mine, my car is a 93 so need one for an earlier model.
