Call me a Volunteer, but MS-ing an Automatic?

Why? Because I can - or would at least want too... I've actually been enjoying the daily in Auto trim - I'm just getting old.

Anyway, I bought Pdetxa's 99-00 PNP off him when his poor car was totalled - I have everything to do a manual swap, but wanted to try the auto first. The issue I see is controlling the transmission shift points. If it's not possible, with out great lengths of electronic mastery (any all all), then I'll just have to go ahead with the manual swap - or use the stock ecu with a piggyback.

I was just curious how the auto would hold up/behave under boost - and when it blows chunks, swap the manual stuff in.

Haven't really seen anyone turbo an Auto - anyone? Searched but found fail...

LOL at title change...

Found this from Joe Perez back in the day from M.net:

Hmmmm.

The only electrical connection between the ECU and the A/T controller is a single wire at position 2Z on the ECU, but the factory manual is giving me no help at all on what the function of that wire is.

I think my recommendation for a parallel build stands. Leave the stock ECU in place to handle the A/T, A/C, ISC, etc., and let the MS run spark and fuel. This process is reasonably well-documented here: How to make and install your own Diy MegaSquirt - Miata Turbo Forum - It's the Cat's Meow

Essentially, you'd cut the two lines driving the injectors (2U, 2V) and the two lines driving the ignition (1H, 1G) and run these to the MS. You'll also splice into the lines for power, TPS, CLT and CAS, and run these also to the MS.

You can save some time (at the cost of some money) by ordering an ECU extension harness from Boomslang, rather than piecing together your own: http://www.boomslang.us/extension.htm

Anybody know what kind of torque a stock A/T can handle? I'm thinking particularly of a shift under boost.

Is Pen_2 still rocking an Auto? - He called me a bad word and doesn't like me - maybe it's about the unicorns on his wall ;)

Glitters (Brain) - want to build a piggy back harness for me like you built in the quoted thread link?

i think it sends a ground to the unit with key on.

i mean i dunno. there's like 2 references to 2Z. it says 0v when key on, and if ever vb the ECU is bad. but who knows if it's a signal of sorts.

I didnt even see this thread before I got a sext message from genesplicer...

...to answer the question for everyone here. Yes, I ran an automatic with a MSPNP just fine @ 15psi, until my partout for cash. It ran just fine with no issues with the transmission. The automatic has a separate control module for the transmission itself.

It is okay to plug in and tune a MS just fine without needing a piggyback.
