cant get a stable timing indication

Im attempting to verify my timing and I cannot get a stable reading. I've gone through the steps; mark dot at cyl. 1 TDC, set fixed timing to 10* let the car warm up, ect. But when I go to verify the timing, the dot is walking all over the place as the idle oscillates. I've verified that all 4 of my coils are working properly.

I can get the car to idle and run smooth if I wing the trigger angle till the engine sounds good, but when I switch it to fixed timing to get check where its at it goes to ----.

If it were a old v8, I'd just wing the timing, but clearly that's not the correct solution. Is there something completely obvious that im missing to get this timing dialed in?

1.6, toyota cops, 460cc injectors, ms3x, tdo5-16g turbo.
Im running a spark plug wire from my coil to the spark plug to get my timing signal. The rpms on my timing light are correct.

Post your msq.

I had to turn on fixed timing and then manually turn the cam position sensor because I couldn't figure out which way to go with the trigger wizard.

Heres the current tune and a log of it idling.

Had to go find some WiFi with my laptop. :facepalm...

Im assuming its going to be related to adjusting the pots for crank/cam inputs, but what will I be looking for mid adjustment on the composite view as I dont have access to an O-Scope to do it properly.

You are setting fixed timing to -10 correct?

Entering "-10" tells it to use the regular map. He needs to enter "10."

Question for Darthteddy- is the idle stable to begin with? If engine RPM is erratic, then actual timing will also be erratic. Predictive timing goes all to hell when the engine is stumbling around at very low RPM trying to find a stable idle.

Yes its set to -10.

Im trying to go off of this

http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_arti...#tooth_logging

But I have no idea what the pattern should look like for this motor.

I cant get it to idle worth a ---- with the 10degrees fixed, as in it barely stays running. With the -10 it idles ok but not great by any means. When I just messed around with the trigger angle until the motor sounded healthy, it would idle pretty good. Its when I attempt to adjust it in fixed mode that it wont idle well.

question for brain, with tunerstudio, doesnt it use whatever value you input for fixed timing, as in it will be fixed at -10 or fixed at 10? I realize in all the write ups it says to go 10, but im just curious.

OK I feel like a retard, mods please delete this thread...

Went out and bought a new timing light. No more problems.

Moral of the story...Dont let people borrow your ----. Same model timing light, same setting on it, measures it fine. Fml

lol ya dont feel bad my old snap on light with the knob messed up, i couldnt figure out why it wouldnt go over 5500 rpm's...

You are correct, I just looked at TS at the settings again. It has been awhile since I have had to set base timing on an MS.
