Cold starts will end me

I've looked around on here for a while now and havn't found anyone with my specific problem.

Assuming cold start: To get my car to not die I have to hold the gas down a little, and when I do that it leans out to 16-18. When I let it attempt to idle (cold idle sucks), it'll idle at normal AFRs for cold temps. If I even think of touching the gas, it falls on its face and stalls/almost stalls, then it catches itself and runs lean. It hasn't been that annoying but now that its getting somewhat cold in the mornings, its getting really irritating.

Does anyone know what setting I'm supposed to mess with to get this shit to stop? I've tried messing around with a lot of warm up settings and it gets me nowhere.

Post your .msq for us to look at and make opinions on.

msq attached.

Joe, is that what I should have in those areas, or just things I should mess with?
wat do?

jbresee 10-21-2010 01:16 PM

I have the identical cold start issues, but only when the outdoor temp drops below about 45f.

I checked, and I already have Joe's suggested settings.

Yesterday I tried adding a little to the after start enrichment % at the 40 degree mark. It seems to prevent the stall on starting so far.

For the record, my settings are identical to the pic posted above, no luck.

Yeah, I'm still running ugly until it warms up.

Braineack 10-25-2010 09:00 AM

I bet it's fault of that stupid AIT corrections table curve, and an untuned VE table as result.

under after start enrichments, change the decay back from "normal" to "fixed map", then add more fuel into the VE table around the 84-75kPa cells and 800-1200 columns.

MartinezA92 10-25-2010 09:22 PM

Will try that later. Why would that have any effect though? When the car is warm it will run fine regardless of outside temp, this is only first thing in the morning, for about 2 minutes. AIT's wouldn't have changed that much in 2 minutes would they?

So, now that its as cold as it gets where I live, I tried this, and it didn't do anything...its a relatively warm morning, so I'll try again tomorrow when its like 35-40 F.

If I park the car outside and its really cold, its damn near impossible to drive if I don't sit and force it to idle (about 2k) for a minute or 2.

Have you tried richening up the start and afterstart enrichment? I did that and my car starts great in the reason cold mornings we've been getting.

MartinezA92 01-16-2011 12:15 AM

As long as I'm idling, it seems that the enrichments work fine. Its when i touch the throttle that it falls on its face. Almost like it doesn't add fuel fast enough.

Zyrano 01-16-2011 01:00 AM

ah! I see, sorry, I thought you meant it wouldn't start.

Zyrano 01-16-2011 01:02 AM

when you say normal afrs, what do you mean? 14.7? it may help to have it idle richer at cold start

MartinezA92 01-16-2011 03:55 AM

Cold idle is 13.5ish.

It's been a while since I played with it, but I think I remember having to add absurd amounts of fuel at cold temperatures to get it to idle right for the first few minutes on cold mornings (even then it usually only stayed running on the second attempt). This is in Maine in the winter... it pretty much ran great above about 40*, and there was only one day I couldn't get it started, and it was more than -10*

I did have to let it idle for 10-20 seconds before I could go anywhere though, which sounds like the problem you're having. I'll be interested to see what the solution is.

I sold the car a few months ago, but I'll see if I can find an old msq somewhere.

Edited to add .msq I found.

Update: I still havn't fixed this. It got warm and I forgot about it/got lazy.
Now its cold again and I have to start the car like 5 times in the morning to get it to stay running (poorly). I'm getting mad.

Does not having an IAC make this problem worse/just have to deal with it?
I'm going to just add a ton of enrichment in cold weather and see what happens.

I notice your settings are different than mine. Does anything about this look really wrong to anyone? I know my numbers under 0 degrees a little low, but it doesn't get much under 30 degrees here.

Great question funny you posted this I just posted almost the same question about 2 hours before you only with less detail. Im excited to see the answer!

Grrr.

Now that I think about it, do enrichment settings have anything to do with acceleration enrichments when its cold?

If cold start acceleration enrichments was a setting this would not be a problem, lol.

flounder 11-24-2011 06:32 PM

Any chance you have some old seals that are allowing unmetered air in at cold temps?

Try spraying some carb clean around the injectors, hoses, etc while it's running shitty and see if the idle changes.

Ya never know?;)
