Considering switching ECUs..
 

Hey guys,

Earlier this year I bought a supercharged Miata known as Big Gulp. She uses a Haltek E6 ECU currently. When the car was built, this was the best solution. But now it would seem the Megasquirt is more than capable to handle the cars needs.

On top of that I have an electrical issue to work out, and I am pretty sure it is in rats nest of wiring that is a result of the Haltek being hacked into the Miata wiring harness.

So I am considering ripping it all out, wiring harness, sensors and all.. selling it and replacing it with a stock harness, sensors and a megasquirt.

My question is one of cost. Honestly, about how much can I expect to spend for a MS, wiring harness and sensors? Any idea?

Go with the DIYPNP, build it yourself, add seq. injection, expect to pay just under $500.

I have two of these haltechs to sell, so I should be able to make enou to come out a little bit ahead on the deal, I suspect.

If I go the MS route, I would probably rather spend the extra to get you to build it. That way I KNOW it is done right and not messing up due to a mistake of mine ;)

Any idea what I could expect to spend on new wiring harnesses and sensors? Most of my sensors are replaced with haltech units i believe... And the wiring harnesses are well... All effed up...

Ok new question... Is the MS truly the best option as far as ECU's for boosted Miatas go? Cause I own one of if not the most extreme version of a SC'd Miata. So I want the best management I can get for it. The Haltech is not it. Especially since no one for 400 miles can dyno tune one.

I'd look into an AEM if it was my car.

"Best" is hard to quantify. Best value for money? Definitely. Best looking case? No, it's pretty plain-looking, actually. Best community support? It's a contender.

Realistically, all of the high-end ECUs do the same basic job. They control injectors and ignition, and a few other bits. The biggest difference is probably the tuning software, and that's entirely a matter of personal preference.

I wouldn't hesitate at all to build an MS2 (including a DIYpnp) for any Miata engine that you could reasonably imagine building.


I must admit that I'm not familiar with your particular car, however Chris Swearingen seems to be happy with the MS2 that's controlling his 300 HP Ubercharged '99 engine.

Oh, and one last thing. Apostrophes indicate possession or a contraction. Every time you use an apostrophe to pluralize a noun, God kills a kitten.

It seems the local guys are familiar with MegaSquirt. That is a big bonus for it as well.

The car I bought is dynoed at 347 RWHP and 345 Torque at 26 PSI. No bottles and no Methanol. I currently run it at 16 PSI max, with Methanol injection as an octane booster, mostly.

The motor itself has been balanced, blueprinted, ported and polished. Weisco pistons, Pauter rods, Intercooled Coldside Magnusson MP62 supercharger, All custom hardware and design. And as a backup a 125hp shot of Nitrous.

However, it is currently crippled with electrical problems, so I will be ripping out the hacked up haltech harness and engine harness. And replacing the haltech at the same time.
