diypnp and VVT
 

I am considering a 1.8 swap in my 93 that is currently running on a diypnp. Looking around and i found a great deal on a low milage VVT engine. I did some research but have not found anyone running VVT on a MS2 only on MS3.

What i would like to know is if the MS2 is capable or running VVT with or without the VVT controller DIY sells.

From what i read in the diypnp page for the miata, i cannot tell if the tuner is required or optional?? I am probably misreading it and it is an obvious answer.

"If you have swapped in a VVT motor from a ’01-’05 Miata and wire the sensors directly to the DIYPNP, sharing them with the VVTuner (instead of using pass through mode), connect the R3 resistor in the 5 volt position instead of the 12 volt. Using the 12 volt may cause sync problems."

That may be someting i dive into at a later date. my diypnp dropped into my lap for so cheap i could not turn it away. I will save up some cash and look for a ms3 if i go the route of a VVT engine.

Is the basic ms3 kit enough or do you need the ms3x?

youll need/want the expander board. it's worth its weight in gold.

I am running diypnp and vvtunner.
It runs pretty good and is ok but some day I will go ms3x. I feel like they have ironed out all the kinks and ms3 is good value. Still for what 200 the vvtunner will have you running pretty good till you can get ms3.
I run mine 2560 garrett with stock internals at 9psi and I was staying with a 5.0 mustang on the straights this weekend. Killing him in corners.

I had some issues with the vvtunner and the diypnp being happy on the same positive wire. Had to feed them separately but I think thats a weird wiring issue unique to my car
If you wired and tuned your diypnp I bet you can handle the vvtunner no problem but ms3 is the real solution from what the knowledgeable people on here say and i believe them. That's probably true no matter what year 1.8 engine you buy thou.

looks like the ms3x kit is around 550. out of curiosity, will the ms3 upgrade at the link below work on a diypnp?

Thanks Ben, i didnt think so, but i figured i would ask.

I pulled the trigger on a VVT motor, now i need to sort out the EMS.

What did you do eventually ?

I will use my DIYPNP on my vvt build, I'll turn the vvt (lets say connected to ALED ouput) on at 2000rpm and off at 5500rpm (as I found on the dyno) - I think it will work np. (just need to check if I need a relay or not - don't think so.)

i built an MS3x and custom engine harness. Works great and is far better than a diypnp. If you can build it yourself, you can upgrade to an ms3x cheaply. selling your diypnp will mostly offset the cost.
