Dyno later today - Suggestions!!!???

Heading to a dyno today. Plan on a couple of hours. It's a 1750 mustang load unit. Shop is a Ford shop, but has worked on a number of turbo Miata's in the area. Tuner is running Megasquirt in his turbo'd Mustang.

Suggestions to get prepared for this? My 1st trip to a dyno. I don't know what to expect! Anything I can do to help be prepared to cut down on dyno time is a good thing!

reddroptop 07-21-2008 03:41 PM

2 bottles, big ones.

Put new plugs in before you go.

cueball1 07-21-2008 03:52 PM

Just installed new cooler plugs NGK 7's gapped to .25, fresh oil change, fresh oil in diff and tranny.

2 bottles? No NOS for me! Here in the NW we are the world's Microbrew capitol though. Maybe a couple of growlers? except I have to drive home too!

I din't know if I should copy some different spark maps from here to try, if they just work with what I have. I don't know what to expect. This seemed like the only shop in my area that had any real Miata or Megasquirt experience. Don't know how good they really are.

I just received but haven't installed my Knocksense. Should I bust my butt to get that in?

Bring plugs with you, make sure that the car is 100%, change the oil before you go, and not long after you get done.

I would highly reccomend being 100% sober throughout the entire dyno seesion....and even more than that, make sure your tuner is as well. :giggle:

When I read this, I assumed two bottles of booze. Sometimes goes a long way when they tally up the final time. I.E. billed for two hours when it was really three or four, or not charging for tuning time between pulls.

I dont know whats the rule for 99's, but 6's are the recommendation for anything 97 down.

cueball1 07-21-2008 04:58 PM

Saml01,

I've always heard 6's or 7's. I was having trouble with popping/hesitating with the 5's and my car is going to see a fair bit of track time this summer. I went with 7's. Still getting some issues with the 7's gapped down. Might be too rich under accel. That's one reason I'm hitting the dyno.

Braineack 07-21-2008 05:47 PM

omg hit it already!

bkr7 for 1.6L bkr6 for 1.8L

cueball1 07-21-2008 08:41 PM

Just got back. I'm a happy boy!

I'll make another post in the prefabbed section with the sheet.

Made 240 rwhp and 211 ft/lbs on a Mustang dyno at 10+psi. It's a strong little Miata!!!

Didn't really tweak the tuning I already had much. My hesitation/ popping under boost was my fault! The overboost cut out was set too low!

Braineack 07-21-2008 08:51 PM

sweet!!! sounds great!

SeanE 07-21-2008 09:11 PM

Those are great numbers. Any dyno graphs for us to look at?

cueball1 07-21-2008 10:56 PM

Dyno chart is posted in the Prefabbed dyno and timeslip section here...

why? Do you change the oil in your car every day?

Its just recommend. Dyno tuning a car puts some pretty heavy loads on the engine, and as such creates a lot of heat. Not to mention, if you are running really rich and the fuel leaks past the rings it will eat your bearings for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Obviously, it is less of a problem without a turbo.

;)

I drive my turbo car as hard as if it where on a dyno on a day by day basis. And for a longer time under high laod realy. And i still manage bot 1k miles or so on a oil change, with non amsoil synth etc.

So you hold it at one load cell for a couple mins 10-20 times a day?

Thats just what I've heard recommended, it wasn't meant to be some sort of dyno gospel. I wouldn't even change it before and after. Bring spark plugs, yes, change oil no. Would I run the average 6k on it? No, of course not, but I try for every 3k for all of my oil changes.

You change your oil every 1k miles?

cueball1 07-22-2008 12:50 PM

I'm running full synth. Changed the oil/ filter yesterday before going out. Don't think I'm going to swap out the full synth before it's due.

If it has spent a couple hours making runs and full boost under various loads and speeds to do a lot of fine tuning it might have been another story. As it was the car made 3 baseline passes and maybe another 1/2 hour of messing around trying to get things better. Bottom line was it was running really well when I brought it in and nothing significant was changed.

cueball1 07-22-2008 12:52 PM

Next adventure this week is the late night drags! The following week is my 1st boosted track day. Yee haw.

I run full synthetic in my miata, mobil7500 in my Protege, and dealer synthetic in my Mazdaspeed6. The miata on average I get around 9000 miles on before it starts to change colors, then I change it. The protege gets average of 10,000 before it changes colors, thats when I change it. The speed6 I get changed every 5000 miles per dealer, color changed or not.

When an oil no longer has the caramel color and starts to blacken its detergents have begun to break down and no longer is a good lubricant.. Which in 90% of vehicles is when it should be changed. I've followed that rule for over 10 years and have never found sludge in a vehicle I've performed that cycle on, nor have I had any problems. Learned it from my grandfather who did the same thing for over 70 years. ;)

Oh, and I run Mobil1 in my Crotch Rocket (1994 600cc Ninja) which I run the everloving fuck out of. Bought the bike with 2300 miles on it, it has 47,000 with the factory engine, gearbox, and clutchpack. Second gear shift fork is bent and the dog is cracked, but that happens on all ninjas of my model year around 12000 miles like it did. $68 in parts and 4 hours of my time would fix that. On average I change the oil in 15000 mile intervals on the bike, switching the filter out every 7500. Some weekends the bike gets topped out, which is 14,200rpm in top gear for nearly 10 minutes straight.

I don't understand. With this logic, shouldn't you change oil after every 20 minute session on the track? I'm not trying to be a dick, but I don't think the oil needs to be changed so frequently. I had oil analysis done last year after 3 track days, and a change was still not in order according to the lab.

Considering your sig, you know a lot more about this than I do.

Actually, I have heard of people doing that.

My sig could say "I cut off the supply of oxygen to my brain for over 25 minutes, I barely recovered, I'm not actually writing this as I'm comatose," and that statement would still hold true.

BURN!

God I love this forum.

JWX - maybe you can help suggest some things to try on my idle trouble thread! Really appreciate having a couple of good active vendors here!!!
