About to try to get my new turbo 95 miata to pass Denver emissions. Will only need to pass the sniffer test. I need to buy a cat since it just has a test pipe currently. If I spend the buck on carb legal cat, is it worth it?

Unfortunately this thing has an e-manage blue system and not the MS yet. I was hoping to pass with a good tune and cat...this thread gives me hope.

I would buy the Magnaflow California catalytic converter. They flow pretty well, and should help you get down to the CO numbers you need.

Also note: I am only running 5 PSI currently. I am thinking I can safely pass emissions in boost. I was planning on stepping it up to 10-15 psi after the pass and driving through the road sides in hopes of not having to step it down again.

Should I return the car to stock injectors, open the wastegate fully? Any other tips so I don't have to take the test a few times?

Done emissions a billion times in Denver.

Any cat will do as long as it actually does its job. I never worried about some CARB number. Fuck California.

Throw some E85 in it.

Done.

If you see a roadside test station, make it a point to go by it a few times a week. Don't coast by just have nice light even throttle as you go by. Sometimes this will negate the need to come in for emissions at all.

Or just register it in Gilpin or something.

Id obviously have to re-tune it for e85? Pretty sure in Colorado you have to register it in the county you live in?

I will look to pass the roadside after I initially get it plated. Unfortunately I bought this guy's hot mess due to the parts already on it.

Emissions in Co is by county. Jeffco is brutal, and I had a standard cat with a megasquirt. First couple of tries, I couldn't pass until I backed off the timing and leaned out all of the tables and installed the Magnaflow cat.

This is my fear with just a standard cat and tune.

Tried it.. but I suspect I had too much else going on for it to work.

You should be fine. I'm pretty sure all emissions testing for the Denver Metro area is the same. I passed easily with numbers half of the limits on my original cat and tuned for 14.7 everywhere but boost. Didn't bother with e85 or any other tricks.

Check out all the codes it had! They said I passed CEL but they just didn't bother to look behind my ScanGauge lol.
You have ODB1, why would they read codes? That's the whole reason you go on a sniffer.

anyway, buy my cat if you want one.

For everyone else in this thread:

Having a turbo does not change anything in terms of emissions. tuning like a shithead does.

Test Subject 04-24-2014 12:25 PM

Thanks Braineack. I am fairly confident in passing but need to fix a rich idle condition using e-manage blue. Might just dive into a megasquirt instead of using this POS bandaid.

Braineack 04-24-2014 12:27 PM

Q. why is your emanage not pulling correctly at idle?!

A. tuning like a shithead.
