Failed Emissions Testing Today with MSPNP

I'm hoping this is just a matter of leaning things out at the listed rpm, and figuring out the right load since I know the RPM, and Speed.

High Speed 25 mph at 2252 RPM
HC PPM Standard (160) my reading (134) pass
CO% Standard (0.90 my) reading (.29) pass
CO2% my reading 14.0 no standard listed nor pass/fail
O2% my reading 0.5 no standard listed nor pass/fail
NOx ppm Standard (1179) my reading (1292)
Dilution% standard >6 my reading (14.3) no pass/fail

Low Speed 15 mph at 1941 RPM
HC PPM Standard (166) my reading (261) fail
CO% Standard (0.93 my) reading (.51) pass
CO2% my reading 14.0 no standard listed nor pass/fail
O2% my reading 3.1 no standard listed nor pass/fail
NOx ppm Standard (1304) my reading (1979) fail
Dilution% standard >6 my reading (12.8) no pass/fail

Do you think this is all tuning, or more significant problems. The tech also mentioned to my wife the car got hot, but its been doing ok so far with me driving. He suggested a new thermostat, and a radiator flush.

I have ten days to fix everything, and I don't really want to bring it back to stock just to pass the sniffer.

I am running a cat, with full exhaust. I was hoping to place my order for BEGI turbo kit this month, I really hope this is just tuning, and not death of the little more that could. I noticed a puff or two of smoke when I got on it hard to today off the light hate whit is blue smoke.

I don't know if it matters, i'm complying with North Texas Dallas/Denton county emissions. Nothing under the hood really matters, just the blasted sniffer.

Have you removed the EGR valve? The gas readings seem to indicate it is missing or not working. Cant tell what year/motor you have.

apariah 06-01-2009 11:14 PM

I didn't think the 1.6's had egr this is a 92 1.6

stranges12712 06-01-2009 11:29 PM

TOOOOOOOO rich boy. Lean it out. Yes its tuning. I have my drive clean license. I threw my car on the drive clean dyno to see if id pass cause i needed stickers for my plates, failed the idle, passed asm 25/25(barley) so since i have my license and i can do what i want i put in my vin from the miata and tested my sisters sunfire. PASS! :D It always helps out if you know someone. If not you need to lean that pig out.

apariah 06-02-2009 12:33 AM

Any chance leaning things out, and doing an oil change might help me pass?

SKMetalworks 06-02-2009 12:37 AM

sounds like a good place to start

stranges12712 06-02-2009 12:39 PM

Sure if you havent changed it in a while, check your plugs also, make sure there not pure black lol. But if you do lean it out it should help because my idle was 15AFR and 25/25 was 12.5AFR but still dumping alot of fuel and when i stomped on the gas was all black, cause it was rich, its a brand spanking new motor so it wasn't oil.

apariah 06-02-2009 07:02 PM

I'm going to retune tonight after I get home, and then change the oil and plugs. Retesting scheduled for Wednesday.

hustler 06-02-2009 11:24 PM

just hit 14.7 at all tested cells and you'll pass.

I think I should be good, I just got back from tuning for 14.7. I'm pretty close for the most part, and now I'm just waiting for the engine to cool before I change the oil and plugs and go run again. I can't take the car to the inspection so I think I might teach my wife how to setup data logging before I leave for work in the morning.

Atlanta93LE 06-03-2009 09:53 AM

I passed this past fall (after two failed attempts at "tuning" my way to passing) by turning on and boosting authority to the WBO2 correction in the tested VE zones. Worked like a champ.

:vash:
I failed again, plus the guy tried to fail me for not having power steering on an OEM power steering equipped car. Luckily one of the other guys said hey miata don't come with power steering. Thats the only good thing that happen.

So here's the deal, I failed NOx low and high.

High NOx Standard 1179 mine 1310
Low NOx Standard 1304 mine 2082.

Everything else was great
High Speed 25 mph at 2276 RPM
HC PPM Standard (160) my reading (51) pass
CO% Standard (0.90 my) reading (.06) pass
CO2% my reading 14.4 no standard listed nor pass/fail
O2% my reading 0.51dard listed nor pass/fail
NOx ppm Standard (1179) my reading (1310)fail
Dilution% standard >6 my reading (14.5) no pass/fail

Low Speed 15 mph at 1936 RPM
HC PPM Standard (166) my reading (106) fail
CO% Standard (0.93 my) reading (.04) pass
CO2% my reading 13.9 no standard listed nor pass/fail
O2% my reading .9 no standard listed nor pass/fail
NOx ppm Standard (1304) my reading (2082) fail
Dilution% standard >6 my reading (13.9) no pass/fail

I'm not sure where to go from here, I know that this could be caused by the CAT- I replaced it last year, Water temp - but that seems fine per the Megatune, even when sitting at idle for a half hour. Timing - It confuses the shit out of me, and Matt from DIY said not to touch it unless I had a dyno\\

A new O2 sensor was suggested, but I don't think thats really relevant in this specific scenario. Since I'm running a wide band O2 that seems to be accurate.

Oh, and a lower temp thermostat.

It amazes me I was almost penalized for no power steering, but that fabricated harness, connected to the tundra coils weren't even noticed.

This is such a strange place.

gospeed81 06-04-2009 02:42 PM

Now retard the timing just a little in those cells to get the NOx down.

You are trying to change two different variables, but you also have two tools to use: AFR and timing.

Sounds like you've got the AFRs right...and you're combusting very cleanly as far as hydrocarbons are concerned. Unfortunately your combustion temps are too high >> high NOx.

Retard several degrees and try again.

Andreas 06-04-2009 03:28 PM

I had some problems passing emission but after retarding the timing and tune for 14.7 I'd pass ( it took me about 10 minutes to do the tuning with help of afr targets). To find more info on tuning for emission go to Tuning Your MegaSquirt-II (or MicroSquirt)

Thanks, I'll give this a shot next. Does anyone know if I have to pay again to retest?

hustler 06-04-2009 04:29 PM

They can't fail a car for it not having power steering. Go to a shop in the Barrio.

Some places advertise free retest, but if you didn't see it on a banner or something, you'll probably have to pay again.

I'd try another business if I were you.

Damn, they are strict in Texas!

apariah 06-04-2009 06:41 PM

I'll give the other shop a try next week, when I can go rather than the wife. While adjusting timing, since I'm doing this on the road rather than the dyno, will I be able to tell if NOx would be better or worse based on any reading. I wouldn't expect my intake temp to go down, but would my coolant temp drop noticeably?

stranges12712 06-04-2009 08:42 PM

Usually when you retest you have to pay. Here in Canada its 35.00 for the test. Then every re-test after that is 17.50 so half price, since its a retest. Might be the same over there.
