A few MSPNP questions...

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to put my MSPNP9697 in tonight, and I have a question. I installed my supercharger recently and I ended up using a bigger throttle body for the install. Long story short, with the TPS plugged in my car is undriveable. Just horrible hesitation, and stalling. With it unplugged, it runs fine, obviously telling me I need to adjust it. Since I will be installing the MS anyway, should I install that, and then adjust the TPS after the Megasquirt is installed, or do I need the TPS working correctly before I install this thing? Thanks guys. Looks like a really nice forum and I'm happy to be a part of the Boosted Miata crowd, as well as this forum.

As much as I hate to not insist that you fix everything completely before adding another variable, I don't think it matters.

If you want, you can simply use MAPdot for all your accel needs, and pretty much ignore the TPS. Tie the TPS input to GND so it doesn't float up and enable flood-clear mode. Once the system is up and running, you can troubleshoot the TPS at leisure. Fortunately, MegaTune has a very intuitive TPS calibrator and display.

so if I install the MS as is, I will just have to tune it out? or will it even notice that the tps isn't corrected?

I guess, I don't mind fixing the tps, but I've read the manual and I really just don't understand how to do it I guess... the only thing I can determine is that I have to turn the car on and rotate the tps instead of having it all the way at one way.

All you have to do is open the TPS calibration window, save with the TB open and closed and thats it. Then you view the TPS on the live data window.

If you set everything up for MAP-based instead of TPS-based, you probably won't notice. Granted, I'm speaking from turbo experience rather than S/C experience here, but this is how most of the 1.6'ers do it, since we don't even have a real TPS.

I don't think I understand the problem you're having with it. Mis-adjusted is one thing, broken is another.

Here's a simple diagnostic test you can do. With the key on but the engine not running, use a multimeter to probe the voltage on the Red/Black wire coming out of the TPS, going to 3F at the ECU. It should be close to 0 when the throttle is closed, increasing to close to 5 when the throttle is fully open. It doesn't need to cover the whole spectrum (0.5v to 4.5v would be perfectly acceptable) but it does need to be smooth and linear. No spikes, no dropouts. (if you have an autoranging meter, there will be a hiccup at the meter's scale transition point.)

Once you get the MSPNP in, you can use the RealTime display and the Calibrate TPS dialog to view the "decoded" signal, however I strongly suggest looking at the raw voltage if you suspect you have a problem.

He's using a ford throttle body, not sure which one though

I'm pretty sure its missadjusted. I had to make an extension cable for it though, and if I screwed that up, well, thats the problem. I'm pretty sure I did it right though, and thats what makes me think its not working with the new throttle body.

Yayz... it was miss adjusted. I have to tweak it one more time, and it will be solid. I also need to adjust the throttle cable and maybe grease it up a bit to get a little smoother of a retraction. Other than that, this weekend is megasquirt and 8psi pulley weekend...

Does anyone know where I can get a good base map for a mp62 charger with the 110mm pulley? (basically FM's stock kit)

If you are running on the stock injectors with the MS, you should really upgrade. I'm basically at the same boost level with my older 4-rib, and stock injectors were maxing out above 5500 or 6K. I've put a set of 305's in..... which helps for sure.

Also are you running IC'd?

I could send you over the timing portion of my EB-B map (you'll have to transpose), but basically, I'm pulling timing from around 0 vac, and upto 7* IIRC. The fuel portion isn't going to help much though.

I would say start with the MS PnP Turbo defaults, but get it on a dyno or bare minimum, a WB02 and see. Post it up when you are finished for sure. If I ever do the jump to a MS, it would nice to have a good starting point. <G>

I'm running non intercooled. I'll see how the fuel goes after the install, and if it starts having problems, I'll swap the injectors. I think the most I'll ever run is about 11psi, so I would like to get injectors that will be able to support that also. I already have the walbro 190hp, so the fuel pump should pretty much be good to go, although its not installed yet. The P/O of the kit was running stock injectors with the elf and bipes systems. If it ran well with those, I couldn't imagine that it would run worse with all the power of the megasquirt.

steelrat 05-01-2008 10:53 AM

I had a PC/Bipes before I put the EM in. And I can tell you from the datalogs it looks like they stock 230cc injectors were maxing out pretty quick..... The MS is a much better solution for sure, but you can always add injectors. Just keep an eye on it after you get it running to confirm......

If you want to jump to 11 psi, IC it. I think the stock 4-rib (like mine) @ 7.5 or 8psi is on the edge without IC. If the IC had been available, when I bought mine, I would definately have got it, looking back. <G>
