Firmware Flash Failure (alliteration, ftw)

3 Attachment(s)
I removed my AFM today and installed the gm iat sensor. I unplugged my ignitor, hooked up my laptop to the megasquirt, turned the car to on, verified the megasquirt was communicating okay by opening megatune. I then closed megatune, popped in the mspnp cd, and browsed to the firmware folders. I opened download-firmware.bat, chose the proper com port, then chose N to the upgrade.

I got the following error:
Attachment 215003

Thinking it might have been a "read-only" issue from the cd, i copied the entire cd to disk and tried again.

I attempted to load the firmware again and got this slightly different error:
Attachment 215004

Fearing the worst, i attempted to load megatune and got this error:
Attachment 215005

However, after rebooting the computer and powercycling the megasquirt, I can get into megatune and see the values on the gauges.

Any ideas what I can do to get this firmware upgrade to work?

what are the PNP procedure to flashing? it looks like the boost jumper is still installed...

From the online MSPNP manual:

To download the firmware, go into the MegaSquirt folder and select the “MSPNP MM9093 with AFM” folder if you are using the stock AFM and sensors, or the “MSPNP MM9093 without AFM” folder if you have removed the AFM and installed a GM style IAT sensor. Power up the MSPNP, disconnect the ignitor plug shown above, and connect the MSPNP to your computer. Close any programs such as MegaTune that communicate with MegaSquirt. Run the file named “download-firmware.bat”. This will launch the downloading program.

The downloading program will first prompt you for your COM port, and then ask if you are using a boot jumper. The MSPNP already has MSnS-E firmware loaded, so when the program asks if you are upgrading from standard MegaSquirt code, press N. Once you press N, the download will begin. Do not turn off the MSPNP, plug in the ignitors, or close the downloading program until the download is complete. Normally you do not need to install a boot jumper or open the ECU to reload firmware.

Once the firmware download is complete, you MUST reload the base map, or your updated map which was based on the base map, before reconnecting your ignitor. The .msq file for the base map will be located in the same folder as the firmware update above. Load the base map .msq file using the File -> Open command in MegaTune, and then you can reconnect your ignitor.

Did you power the ECU off and back on between the two attempts? For whatever reason (whatever was done last, short drive, crank, or could even be low battery voltage issues) the MS wasn't ready for the command to be sent... if battery voltage is good then trying again after a power cycle should do the trick.

yep, battery voltage is 12.4v with everything off. I'll go try again.

progress: The firmware installed this time. I heard it prime the fuel pump again (rebooted, i assume).

I tried to log into it using megatune, and got this error:
Attachment 215002

This is an error i've been seeing off and on since i got the megasquirt. If I powercycle the unit and reboot my computer it will usually let me in. As usual, this little trick allowed me to get in and load the basemap.

However, after closing megatune and reopening it, i got the same error message again. :(

EDIT: Assuming I can get into megatune: I had started developing the with-afm basemap msq. Can i just load that msq now that i have the without-AFM setup? or should i copy all of my settings manually into the new without-AFM basemap?

Sounds like a communication issue -- are you using a USB adapter? Which one?

You can load the same basemap you had developed before-- there may be the need for minor VE tweaks with the AFM deleted but nothing major.

I'm using a Radioshack USB-Serial converter. off-white in color. It's the same one i used to use with my emanage blue.

EDIT: Btw, i loaded my old map, plugged in the ignitor, and she fired right up on the first crank. :) It's still kinda running weird, i believe from idling too rich. I won't be able to test that theory or continue until i get my wideband installed, but this is definitely a good first start. :)

Thanks for the quick response Jerry. :bigtu:

NP...

On the Radio Shack adapter-- I've heard people say they work, but I've never tested one-- I tested several though a couple years ago and many had different types of communications problems like the above and worse, and I settled on what seemed to be the best offering I found, and that's what we offer on our site. You're probably OK, but if you continue to have comm issues it's most likely the adapter, you can continue to work around it or get rid of them with a known good adapter if you want.

not that it matters.... but are u sure it flashed everything? remember it's 1700+ lines.... i think my custom built one stopped at 1750

Saml01 12-29-2007 10:36 PM

Betcha the flash was botched. I had the above problems when I tried using a stim with a crappy battery. Took it home, plugged it in, and everything was flawless after that.

Reflash and try again.

Pretty sure it did. It went through over 1700 lines and finished. i don't remember the whole message, but it was a nice affirmative message that ended in "press any key to continue". I did and the batch file exited like it was done. Don't forget, the car DID start afterwards and runs just like it did before, but without the AFM. I think all is good.

I think Jerry is right about the radioshack adapter being my issue, because powercycling the megasquirt ALONE does not fix my problem. I have to reboot the laptop as well. that indicates a problem between the usb port and adapter, not on the megasquirt side of things.
