The first of many stupid questions

I have been reading through the stickys but decide on exactly what i need to get the job done.
Starting this winter im going to be building my own megasquirt ecu. between my dad and i we can get the thing assembled, no problem there. but cant decide on what parts i need to put into to get the right outcome. i want it to be a standalone system, the car has had the ac removed so that dosnt need to be wired in. oh and i want to keep it MBC.
What all should i need, to do it correctly.

I believe your first of many stupid questions is missing a question.

ha, its edited.

Techsalvager 09-07-2011 12:26 AM

you need MS unassembled kit, get atleast pcb v3 and MS2 or MS3

redturbomiata 09-07-2011 12:30 AM

addons cards? wiring harnesses?

Techsalvager 09-07-2011 12:36 AM

wiring harness you can do a couple ways, I cut apart another ecu to get its main connector out and wired up wires to the db37 soldercups that come with the kits.
I just bought some wire and did mine up, or you can buy diyautotune's colored coded wiring, they also have prebuilt harnesses.

Check their wiring componets area.

you haven't said anything that I noticed would need addon cards.

Techsalvager 09-07-2011 12:40 AM

I would also recommend a wideband if you don't have one already. I'd recommend a slc oem one if you want a good cheap one. If you want one that has a gauge readout, I'd probably go with a innovate MTX-L

buffon01 09-07-2011 12:47 AM

I wonder if you read the "How to build your own Megasquirt" thread by Brain. I am pretty sure he included a list of parts as well as a detail step-by-step assembly process...

Techsalvager 09-07-2011 12:47 AM

soldering iron, solder

redturbomiata 09-07-2011 01:25 AM

i did read that thread he mentioned some addons and i was wondering if i need them for my particular application. does the ms have fan control.

Techsalvager 09-07-2011 01:34 AM

programable outputs, so yeah its on there how to drive the fans

You decided to ditch your half ass pos bandaids and go ms.
You are not stupid after all.

Good luck. The amount of info about ms on this site is staggering.

Signature worthy
i have had the intention of going ms since around june, but havnt been able to afford the pnp. im going to save up and build my own. its cheaper and i will understand it better. thoughts on the tester device?

One bit of advice for reliability. Do as little hacking on your stock harness as possible. Get proper connectors to make a patch cable into your MS.

Who sells the needed pieces. reliability is a must. how hard is it to switch between a couple tunes. im thinking a Good MPG tune, Race tune, and a split between the two.

hornetball 09-07-2011 05:46 PM

I'm not sure, but I know they are available. Do a search, I seem to remember someone posted links to a source.

In my case, I just went MSPNP . . . problem solved. But it is more expensive, and I often wish I was MS2 or MS3 based.

It is really easy to change tunes. Takes about 5-10 seconds. However, I don't think you're going to find it necessary. Generally, you select between the "race tune" and the "economy tune" with your right foot.

redturbomiata 09-08-2011 11:08 PM

just wondering if you can program it to have warnings/ do something about a problem. lets say a/f ratio drops below 12:1, i would like a buzzer or something to go off. and maybe within the ms change settings automatically.

soviet 09-08-2011 11:18 PM

http://miataturbo.wikidot.com/ms2-i

I used this for building my MS2 and it was HUGELY useful. That was my basic "guide", supplemented by some sticky threads in here for things like fuel pump mod.

soviet 09-08-2011 11:23 PM

Also, for the harness I would spend the $$$ on a DIYBOB - http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/d...pin-p-411.html

I imagine it would make soldering the harness way, way easier.

Doable with a flick of a switch, switch between two tunes.

How would the two tunes be different?

pointless. How about be easy on the go fast pedal and stay out of boost when cruising?

one is biased to high AFRS and high timing in cruise, the other not so much

same as 100kpa line, other starts adding fuel eariler

Depends on what you want and need.

I try to aim for 14.7:1 at 100kpa to around 3800rpm for my current cruising setup

also I'd be worried about transtional spark timing, say coming off of fuel load down where spark timing is at 35-40 degrees and mashing the pedal and jumping back up into high boost area where timing is limited by det

Like wise if you plan to use different fuels that could be a good reason to have mutiple maps, e85\93 LPG\93 etc

for some reason they dont sell e85 in that many gas stations around here, and theres a company about 20 min up the highway that makes it. but for the DD tune i want to run 89 and the race tune 93.

its a DD for the nice weather part of the year, so the tune i run on the street will be designed for lower power better milage. but i want to be able to go to a tune with the power also.
but you guys are the ms people, im just asking if its possible to do it. and being able to shift tunes on the fly would be nice, not necessary because i will have my laptop with me most of the time.

So, you're really going to go to the dyno twice to tune spark . . . once with 89 and a second time with 93? The cost of a second tuning session buys a bunch of premium . . . and you'll be happier with the snappier performance and better mileage to boot.

no i was looking for milage mostly. figured i can have power or milage not both. btw i grow up on old ford v8s so this whole 4cyl turbo thing is a adjustment.

Braineack 09-09-2011 11:54 AM

27mpg city and 230rwtq... im good.

im getting 25, at maybe 150hp? so one tune it is. but anythoughs on

just wondering if you can program it to have warnings/ do something about a problem. lets say a/f ratio drops below a set range. i would like a buzzer or something to go off. and maybe within the ms change settings automatically.

That rule mostly applies to carburetors where you have a main jet, a power valve, an idle mixture screw, and that's it. Imagine if a carb had twelve separate power valves, and you'll see why that rule doesn't hold true with EFI.

redturbomiata 09-09-2011 03:24 PM

ok so once again looking through the options, and the diypnp is looking appealing, says its ms2 based. it uses the factory wiring harness too correct? any problems with the diypnp kit, limitations type things.

Braineack 09-09-2011 03:44 PM

it has a limited number of inputs and outputs if you get too crazy with it. But a crap ton of guys here on running it.

as long as i can run it as a standalone and maybe ebc still undecided about that.

soviet 09-09-2011 04:14 PM

you can't upgrade DIYPNP to MS3. but you could sell it and just buy an MS3 kit.

yea i think the 2 should do good enough for me, if not as you said ill sell it and build a 3.
