First Startup - Newly Built VVT Swap

Gents,

I'm struggling with the first start of a built VVT swapped into my '90 chassis. I've searched, and read, and checked everything I can think of. I'd really like to be able to get the new motor running and broken in before the car gets put away for the winter and any advice that can come from looking at my logs would helpful.

The details:
  • Engine will crank and occasionally fire but will not run for more than a second or two.
  • Logs show Sync Error 2
  • 90-93 MSPNP-Pro - ran well on my old 1.6 a month or two ago
  • FM 36-2 trigger wheel on ATI damper
  • BP6D engine with forged rods, new rings, cylinder hone, 9:1 pistons, new bearings, BE oil pump
  • FF 610 sequential injectors - worked well on old motor
  • FF LS Truck coils, batch fire - new for this part of the build
  • Wired following the VVT Swap Megathread
  • I'm Reusing my old tune with Req Fuel scaled up, Miata 36-2 trigger wheel selected. Also tried DIYs basemap without luck.
I set the crank sensor gap to 0.5mm (also tried 1mm), checked that the trigger wheel was installed correctly, and check the timing belt.

Can a misfire be the root cause of a sync issue or should I focus on looking for a problem with the sensors and their wiring and MS settings?

Problem solved: I had an insecure spark plug connection (the terminal was ~10mm farther up in the boot than the other wires) that was causing intermittent spark. I also messed with my crank angle sensor gap - adjusted it to ~5mm (again) and the car fired right up.
