Have some simple questions for those who have gone before...

I have a 90 model that I want to play with. It is getting a 2000 Engine next weeks and a turbo sometime in the months following (T3Super60).

I have a couple of questions:

1.) What is the shopping list for a piggy-back install?
1a.) Do I really need the relay board ? do you have it?
2.) Are you using the miata coils and crank angle sensor? Any issues?
3.) Did you have to buy any sensors to get it to work with MS?
4.) Looking back what would you do different?

Thanks,
Chris

I dont have a MS (yet but I know some of the answers.)
1) you need a MS v3 board and the MS extra firmware and a few mods to use spark. (simular to setting up MS for a DSM I guess) You should also have a stimulator (it helps troubleshoot)
1a) No you dont need the relay board from what it looks like. Most of the miata installs I have seen dont use it.
2) yup you can use the CAS and stock coils with little issue you just have to mod the MS for spark. or you can use ford EDIS.
3.) You will proabably need an intake air temp sensor (GM) and can use your stock coolant temp (takes a lil modding using a program called easytherm. Look at the settings peopel use for RX-7's I beleve they are simular- a good place to start.)
4) I would not drag my ass so much to buy it. Oh well it lets me improve my knowledge!

Hi guys

I hope that you don't mind me giving few answers to kags1969 original questions.

1.) What is the shopping list for a piggy-back install?
I bought a MS1 v3.0 from diyautotune along with the GM temp sensor for the AIT. I also needed/wanted a heap of electronics gear that I purchased from Jaycar to be able to do the job.

1a.) Do I really need the relay board ? do you have it?
I didn't get one and my car is running just fine.

2.) Are you using the miata coils and crank angle sensor? Any issues?
Yep, I've spliced the MS into the OEM wiring and it's running from the CAS and using the OEM ignitor and coils.

3.) Did you have to buy any sensors to get it to work with MS?
No, I didn't have to get the GM sensors and my car ran fine for fuel only on the old 1.6. The GM sensors do make things easier though and when I do my cooling re-route I will be using a GM sensor for cooling temp as well.

4.) Looking back what would you do different?
Probably heaps of things. My reasons for getting the MS were to properly tune my 1.8 engine which is going to have a 260 duration Mazdaspeed intake cam. I started with a fuel-only set up on the old 1.6 so I could learn to tune the thing without having to worry about the engine if I totally stuffed things up. Then I took it all off while the 1.8 went in, drove around with the 1.6 ECU running the 1.8 (and causing me a bit of grief in the process) and then I finally modded the MS to be able to run the PWM idle control as well as the ignition and since then everything has been sweet.

I really wish that I'd just left it on the car while the engine swap was done and had the thing running the 1.8 from the start. It really was that easy to get running with the MS that I shouldn't have waited.

I hope that helps with your install decisions. If anyone has any more questions than I'd be more than happy to try and help out.

Did you have to buy something extra to use the PWM Idle?

Please refer to here, look at the 3)...... point.

sorry, what is a PWM?

Cool. Thanks for the input.

I am going to try MS. I like tinkering and this looks like it could be really fun.

As it stands now. I will be installing a 1.8L engine and getting it to run on the 1.6L ecu before I start the MS install. I then plan on getting a ECU side Loom connector and wiring the MS into that loom, so it will truely be pnp. I bet Boomslang will sell me the ecu side with wires attached...

Ok , What are the benefits/problems of using MS1 or MS2 ? I know MS2 is faster, and more upwardly moble.. but will it work with the miata coils and sensor?

Thanks,
Chris

The four people who I've heard of using MS for fuel and spark are all using MSnS-Extra which means that we all use the MSI. Once there is a MSII/Extra code up and running I will certainly upgrade to the MSII. But until then MSnS-Extra is doing a brilliant job for me.

Ok, I am all over it. I just ordered the MS1 v3 from Procar for $274. I couldnt justify doing that much soldering for $80. I like soldering and all, but a whole pcb would be an ass kicker... hehehe.

I ordered an OEM type ECU connector and will am going to wire the MS directly into the connector so that it will be pnp with the stock harnes... that should be plenty fun. Hopefully I can get it to work with out having to hack into the stock harness...

Thanks for your input and experiance Steve.

Where did you order it from?

Cool, thats not a bad deal either.

Is there anything that WONT work on the car without the stock ECU hooked up? AC? Cruise? Fans? I know some stuff MS can handle.

kags1969 03-08-2006 03:10 PM

Ok, I took Aussies and Kings info and some of my Emange crap and combined it into a little ecu ms pin out. Let me know if anything looks funky. Always looking to improve the knowledge base, so if you have any additional thougths or comments, I will gladly update.
