Having Issues with Enhanced MS2 features, fuel pump, AC.

I've been trying to get my car on the road again and having some issues. 1990 Miata, 1.8 Coils, Rev's Enhanced MS2

1) I can't seem to make any of the enhanced MS2 features work or my cooling fans. It will turn on the CEL when the ignition is on, then it will turn the CEL off when the engine is running. However it wont turn on the fans, or blink the CEL for overheat. Is it in output port settings somewhere ? I've tried checking enabled, and messed with power on and active value.
How come none of them are enabled yet I can change the settings? They are not grayed out? What should this be set to?
  • AC on runs BOTH fans and they are not hooked together.
  • ECU will not turn on fans when warm.
  • ECU will not flash CEL when warm.
  • I'm not sure how to check voltage or any other enhanced ms2 features.

2) When I start the car it will idle to 3000RPM and stay there. I can get the idle to step to 77 which brings my idle down to ~2000 rpms. The low end idle range is set to 70 steps, it never even tries to get there. Solved!

3) Fuel pump runs all the time when the ignition is on. I'd like to to prime and turn off. I'm not sure why.

18psi 07-30-2017 05:09 PM

why is your idle duty at 77? we set it to 55 open, 32 closed. did you invert the settings? otherwise you might be so far out of the range that it's gone full circle and raising it lowers the idle. or something. I know when we did the idle test that one day 55/32 was your range, not 77

Mysticle31 07-30-2017 05:22 PM

I translated % to steps. Right below the % textbox is the steps textbox. It's easier for me to think about in terms of steps, since the idle valve gauge reports in steps.

Percent wise I'm at 55 open 27.3 closed. I lowered from 32 closed to 27.3 closed trying to see if it would lower the idle.

18psi 07-30-2017 05:58 PM

ahh I see ok. iacv might be getting stuck then
also keep in mind the initial idle values table

Mysticle31 07-30-2017 08:07 PM

Idle problem solved. It was a combo of initial idle values and there is another setting in the other closed loop idle window that sets the minimum range of the iat.

Now for the fans, enhanced features and fuel pump. Any ideas? Rev?

Akina_Downhill 08-01-2017 08:59 AM

For the fans, if the output is indeed IAC1, you need to enable it, and your conditions will have to look like this(I use celsius)
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5873bf9381.png

Under Threshold, dial the temp you want your fans to switch on, under Hysteresis, the degrees the coolant has to drop for the fans to switch off(using the screenshot as example 90-3, 87oC)
You can add additional conditions if you like e.g RPM based.
As for your fuel Pump, what MY is your car?

Mysticle31 08-11-2017 07:28 PM

Thanks Akina. I've messed with all of the outputs in with that configuration. I've even switched them all to power on value on hoping that it would just switch the output to on and then I can see what started.

I wonder if things are different because this is an Enhanced ECU?

My car is a 1990.

I think I've had this problem before, where none of the Enhanced features work and no fans, but when I redo tuner studio with fresh firmware and fresh profile, it works. I'm going to try that when I get up to the shop again.

Have you setup the CAN module? There will be a guide to this in the intructions supplied. This is how Fans, AC and all of the additional features are controller on my MS2 Enhanced from Reverant

Mysticle31 08-12-2017 10:46 PM

Hmm. CAN Module... I just checked that out. I pointed the tune to the firmware ini again, and messed with the output port settings. All that didn't change a thing. See CAN module screens below...

I've tried this with the original settings (enabled unchecked but instead of the coolant and rpm text-boxes being grayed out they are active with values), Enabled On, Enabled Off. I've meed with a bunch of combinations

Regarding the CAN module...What are your settings? Mine are as follows.

Should there be something in CAN devices?

so here's what might be a silly question: did any of the outputs EVER work?
as in, for sure, you remember them working.

cause I've seen some units where most of the outputs weren't even wired in to the ms. just went to the plug and stopped

Mysticle31 08-13-2017 01:54 AM

Oh yeah. They were working even before my drive to your place for tuning help. I've known them to come and go like this, something clears or resets, maybe when I pull the battery for extended period of time.
Things have worked on this build before. I've encountered this problem before after the car had been sitting for a couple years and I reloaded everything from scratch and it worked. There is only like..200 miles on this ECU. Didn't seem to work this time.

I noticed something when I was troubleshooting.
Below 195 - Turn AC on and BOTH fans come on. Turn AC off and BOTH fans go off
~200 - Turn AC on and BOTH fans come on. Turn AC off and the AC fan goes off, but the MAIN fan stays on until ~196/195.

Something is working but not working. It's like it needs a kick in the butt, or a visit form my .45ACP :crx:

Maybe I'll put the old-school thermo-swtich back in somewhere and toggle switch on the dash...

18psi 08-13-2017 01:59 AM

didnt' I set the fan setting to come on past 200 and not stop until car cools to 195?
which would make what you described normal. check it, should be under fan settings in general settings

Mysticle31 08-13-2017 02:56 AM

I just clicked around a bunch and even checked google. I dont see any fan settings anywhere much less in a general settings area. If your referring to what is in output port settings, that set at 195 now. If there is another fan control area, I cant find it.

As I recall, I let it warm get to 201,202 and the fans did not come on so I turned on the AC. I'll mess with it more tomorrow. Thanks for the help/advice thus far! :)

Those are my CAN settings on a Rev MS2 Enhanced. It is on a 99 though so I don't know if there are some differences in the way he builds them for mk1 compared mk2s . There was a download in the instructions for the INI for the CAN expander

hmmmm,
You're right, it must've been one of the other cars I tuned recently.

It's been years since I last tuned a Rev built ms2, does it seriously not have fan settings anywhere outside output ports? (I also looked through your map, and also don't see fan settings anywhere aside from generic output ports) so strange

which firmware are you on?
cause his doesnt' seem to have this at all.
I think he's on 3.3.0

Reverant 08-13-2017 01:30 PM

The ECU in question is somewhat old and has non-adjustable fan control to save two outputs and allow sequential ignition. The fans may start at temperatures between 202 and 207 degrees.

3.3.2b5

Although Reverant himself has already replied so my idea is now irrelevant

Mysticle31 08-13-2017 02:13 PM

I was just trying to find the thread where I purchased the ECU. That way I could see what features it had.

Fans on between 202 and 207,
Boom! They work! Good. All of this because I was expecting them to come on between 195 and 200..lol
  • When does the CEL overheat come on? Looking to test it.
  • Can I upgrade the enhanced features of the MS2 to the configurable version?
  • Why does the fuel pump run constantly with the ignition?
  • The next phase of the project is to make the Knock Sensor Output, and Tach Output work.
    • Do the outputs work like the regular ms2 outputs, on means on and off means off? Something special in how they work?
    • Will this ECU blink the CEL for knock too?
  • Would those spark outputs be Accel LED and Injection LED? I'm referring to something you said a long time ago "Accel LED and Injection LED are spark outputs on ALL of my units, Enhanced or not."
