HELP - crank but no start
hello fellow miata enthusiast!
I have a 91 miata w/ a 1.6 t25 turbo running off mspnp2. after a firmware reflash, she is not starting. Cranks over fine as I have ensured the battery is charged. I do hear the main relay tick and a smell of gas in the garage after attempting to start it. > I unplugged the coil pack before the reflash but got a new one from AZ anyways just to check but no dice. > Cleaned the ignition switch of any buildup, still no start. I have verified and confirmed the base maps on TS and see 99% fuel load. so at this point I am scratching my head.. Maybe check the CAS and double check for spark? Thanks in advance |
Check for physical spark.
Change the one thing that's new to the setup, back to how it was, and see if it starts. |
Installed the old coil pack and checked for spark, nothing. I'm going to install the new coil pack and test for spark. I have a new set of plugs to test with as well.
I've been super busy with work so I've had little time to troubleshoot this but I'll keep y'all posted |
Unplug the ignition module and set the spark output to Going Low (BE SURE TO CHANGE IT BACK TO GOING HIGH BEFORE YOU PLUG IN THE COIL!). Turn the key off and back on again. This should give you 5V on both spark outputs. Let me know what you find.

thanks matt. Will try that

If the only change was changing to new firmware, reload it again and verify you did everything right. Especially selecting the correct file to load when asked what kind of module you have. Last time I loaded firmware 3.3.2 I noticed an option for mspnp2.
Then choose a restore point to just before you tried loading the new firmware. |
Yeah that's a good suggestion hector. I figured since the only thing that changed in the setup was the firmware on the mspnp2. I'll let you guys know what's up and if not I'll upload the file. Thanks for your input.

ill load my file here. I did what you suggested matt but no dice. I still haven't checked for physical spark yet. I'll have to ask my wife to start it while i check.

That MSQ looks like you loaded the DIYPNP with full sized MegaSquirt firmware, which will be a problem with a DIYPNP. You will need to reload the firmware and be sure to select MicroSquirt Module as your ECU type.
|
good deal. I had a feeling this was a programming issue and not a hardware issue since it was running perfectly before. I'll try that today when i get home and let u know the results. Thanks a bunch Matt!

Wait, diypnp or mspnp2? He mentions mspnp2 in the thread Matt, which i noticed was its own ecu type the last time I loaded firmware.
|
It's a mspnp2 I believe. I've never had to do any of the custom wiring in the diypnp pictures I've searched.

Here's a URL with a picture to confirm http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...start=0&ndsp=9

My bad. MSPNP2s should use the MSPNP2 version of the firmware, but my comment that loading it with a standard MS2 code base will cause problems still stands.
|
Thanks for the prompt reply Matt. So I should proceed with uploading the microsquirt module then?
|
I uploaded the red board firmware .s19 file via windows uploader and the .msq & .ini file via tunerstudio. I uploaded the base maps and set it to micro squirt as Matt instructed. I'll attempt starting it tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes.

I think you may still have it wrong. Go here if you haven't done so already:
Megasquirt firmware downloads This is the latest release of the MS2/Extra firmware that the MSPNP2 ecu uses. So download "MS2/Extra latest stable firmware 3.3.2" Load firmware with correct ecu type which for you is "MSPNP2" not "microsquirt module". While the two may be grouped together in which case it doesn't make a difference, just remember these things change pretty quickly and one day they may not. There are several versions of MS2 floating around so keep in mind what you have is a MSPNP2 and the firmware is MS2/Extra. Do not confuse it with MS2Enhanced (MS2E). Only use MS2/Extra for your MSPNP2 when uploading firmware. |

You need to run "ms2loader_win32", assuming you have windows, and follow the prompts. Enter "mspnp2" for ecu type when given the option.
When you go to start TS it will let you know there is a firmware update and that it needs a new ini which it will fetch for you. You'll get an error/difference report most likely which you can just ignore. Go to a restore point before the new firmware which will load the msq you last had running well. |
I uploaded the mspnp2.s19 and .ini file but now it barely cranks over :/
After a few minutes of cranking I smell plastic and see the positive battery cable melting.. Looks like I'm going to need to replace it soon |
