HELP HELP HELP COM PROBLEMS w/ install

Okay so i got the MAP line run to the MSpnp and got my harness all plugged into it and stuff. i go to the com selection cause obviously doesnt work first try with AFM and try ALL ports in my device manager and none work... the MS is illuminated and my key is in the II position. My laptop is a vaio and i had to go to fry's and buy a adapter so that the MS wire would plug into my laptop (2 male pieces) im not sure if thats blocking it. then i searched to find new comp ports and got port #4, but the damn com said it was working but it may not work properly. i tried all the COM's and tested em all of them said TRY AGAIN. its 9 pm and i got places to go soon. can anyone give me some sort of advice. i know its not rocket science but i cant figure this out to save my life. HELP HELP HELp:vash:

Ben 05-30-2007 12:31 AM

I don't know what adapter pieces you got, but they may need drivers installed.
Also in MEGATUNE:COMMUNICATIONS:SETTINGS set the SERIAL DATA RATE to 9600

But I think your problem has to do with the fact that you didn't load any of the drivers you need.

Matt Cramer 05-30-2007 08:40 AM

Are you using XP? If so, try this:

To find out what port the USB adapter is using, right-click My Computer and select Manage. Select Device Manager at the left, then scroll down the right hand column until you find the entry that says "Ports (COM & LPT)". Click the plus sign next to it. You should see an entry that looks like "USB Serial Port (COMx)" where x is the number of the port it has grabbed.

If it's grabbed a port number higher than 4, I recommend changing it to a lower number. Double-click the USB Serial Port item. Then select the Port Settings tab at the top of the box that pops up and click the button marked Advanced. You will see a new screen where you can specify the COM port number; set it to a number less than 5 that is not already in use. Then click OK to close that screen, and OK to close the Properties box. This will set your USB adapter to a lower port number.

Also, like Ben said, you may need to get the drivers for the adapter installed.

SKMetalworks 05-30-2007 09:38 PM

im using Vista... should i try the same thing

SKMetalworks 05-30-2007 09:40 PM

i just read your post and it selected com4. except it said that the device is not working properly. the driver was updated to the most current and still had a ! next to it any sugjestions?

Braineack 05-30-2007 10:09 PM

then the driver isn't working properly, update the drivers again.

SKMetalworks 05-30-2007 10:13 PM

the driver is updated to the most current software available. i deleted the one that was iffy and tried it again and now i cant get that one to show up... im startin to think my connecter might be bad...

EDIT:

I go to the Ports (COM & LPT) and this is the list it gives me
BT Port (COM10)
BT Port (COM11)
BT Port (COM12)
BT Port (COM13)
BT Port (COM14)
followed by 20,21,22 and then 6 and 7

Braineack 05-30-2007 10:24 PM

that particular com port will only show up if whatever the device is is plugged in.

search the drivers for anymore large Yellow exlamations...if you see any at all something is not installed correctly and is preventing you from allowing it to connect.

Seriously for some reason usb adapter drivers are a PITA, it's not just you.

SKMetalworks 05-30-2007 10:27 PM

is the megatune software ment to run on windows Vista? cause it says it only goes 2 XP

Braineack 05-30-2007 10:34 PM

looks like it: http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache...lnk&cd=1&gl=us

SKMetalworks 05-30-2007 10:40 PM

looks like he had to do some "tweaking" with vista to get it to recognize. and then some more to get it running... oh de joy. im going to be putting MS in my closet untill i can figure this dumb shit out!
AOKWJHEROUIWAY$*(@&$*(#&(*&@!*#IOHWKLDNAKL that was me venting.:rly:

Braineack 05-30-2007 10:49 PM

the question at hand is, why are you running vista?

SKMetalworks 05-30-2007 10:52 PM

thats what came with the laptop and... i dont have anything else =(

Ben 05-30-2007 10:54 PM

one of the reasons why I don't run vista is that it isn't compatible with a lot of the software I have to use for work.

it's also expensive and a resource hog. :greddy2:

the drivers for the USB/serial adapter you're using may not be vista compatible.

Matt Cramer 05-31-2007 10:12 AM

Megatune is compatible with Vista, but a lot of the USB adapter drivers out there aren't. I suspect that's the issue.

Defiantely the issue, Vista is a PITA, I install my drivers (it's an executable so I can't point vista directly at it). and despite it stating a successful install the adapter isn't recognised when I go to use it.

Pah, it looks nice but it's hard work!

SKMetalworks 05-31-2007 04:09 PM

okay so i figured out why the ports werent working. they were all Bluetooth. i headed to Fry's electroics and picked myself up a usb-serial converter for 30 bucks. and got it for 10 cause the lady thought i gave her 3 20's. her fault :gay: came back home istalled the driver then went on the net and updated it and SUCESS!! i removed the fuse and plugged in the MAP line and fired her up. THE TIMING WAS WAY OFF IT WOULD BARLY RUN i was like crap what the hell. i tried to adjust the spark iming but the 'Spark' section of MT was not accesiable as well as a few others. Next step?? Help??

neogenesis2004 05-31-2007 04:17 PM

sounds like you havent setup the mega configurator to msnse.

Braineack 05-31-2007 04:17 PM

probably the wrong code variant?

go to configurator > car1 > setting > code_variant

use the pull doen bar for: #set MSNS_EXTRA "James Murray and Phil Ringwood's MSnS extensions"

SKMetalworks 05-31-2007 09:38 PM

you know whats funny. VISTA SUCKS ASS. i did what you said to do and guess what it wont let me over write it. THANK YOU MICROSOFT FOR CREATING PROB THE CRAPPIEST OS EVER:td: . Has anyone found a way around this PITA:vash:

SKMetalworks 05-31-2007 10:27 PM

REV help me. i do nothave a wideband but my AFR IS 28!!! REALLY BAD everything else is working properly just had to dink around. Disregard my last post. IT runs like a POS and TIming is erratic jumping from 10-4 just in milisectonds. i unpluged my Cruise control cause i would not work with the T included. HELP??? higher AFR means too rich correct??

Braineack 05-31-2007 10:41 PM

you have to set your timing now...follow the instructions provided by DIY.

also make sure under EGO you're set to narrowband, not wideband.

cjernigan 05-31-2007 10:52 PM

AFR 10 is Rich 18 is lean for example.

SKMetalworks 06-01-2007 12:48 AM

still runs like shit. i set the timing as best as i coul but it jumps 4* very irratically from 10-6. I swap the ECU back to the factory one and for about half a second it runs really bad then works great with 10* right on the money w/ timin light.. this leads me to believe its a AFR problem. Anyone know how to fix this

Matt Cramer 06-01-2007 08:27 AM

About the timing - do you have the spark option there but grayed out, or is it not there at all? The installer is supposed to set it up for your code variant, but Vista may do funny things to it.

SKMetalworks 06-01-2007 12:38 PM

i can change the timing and spark option is there it just runs bad

Matt Cramer 06-01-2007 12:59 PM

Be sure it's set up for the oxygen sensor you are using - if it's configured for a narrow band, it will probably just give you volts rather than an AFR.

Have you used the fixed timing settings to get the base timing adjusted?

Also, if you could provide a summary of your mods, that would be very helpful. Some mods require changes to the base map.

I see you mentioned problems with the tee we included for cruise control. Could you describe what issues you had in more detail? How is the MAP line routed now?

SKMetalworks 06-02-2007 03:08 AM

well currently im about 800 miles from my car. i feel like an idiot on my drive to montana i was reading the manual and realized I NEVER LOADED THE BASE MAP. i felt like a fcking idiot runnin the car with no fuel changes and on 1 cylender at that. But ive been messing around with a few things but cant really start tuning it till i get back to my car. Anyway ive read up a lot and i should of done that before but ya know i was excited.

MODS- Stock (ordered turbo before i boght this and turbo is comin in the mail greddy kit w/ intercooler)

Ive gotten Knocksense but im not very tech savvy and going to have somone help me put it in.

Also have Water injection coming,Wideband, 440cc injectors, and a few more things. My MAP line runs from where DIY sugjested it too and i routed it through a hole in the firewall.

Oh and the TEe Included one size is too small for the cruise control line. its not a big deal now ill fix it when i got time.

Matt Cramer 06-04-2007 08:26 AM

It should have a base map loaded from the factory, but you will need to get the timing set. If your timing is way off, it will probably not run smoothly. The software lets you temporarily lock out the timing so as to make it easier to set this.

Note that sometimes issues with connecting can accidentally overwrite the base map settings, so it wouldn't hurt to reload it.

Let me know what size tee turns out to be the right one - we want to get this corrected for our kits in stock.

FoundSoul 06-04-2007 12:24 PM

Do let us know about the Tee as Matt mentioned-- it works fine with the cruise control on our '95 car.... I trimmed about 1/2" of line off the stock cruise line to get past the stretched out section and then it fit like a glove.

SKMetalworks 06-04-2007 10:57 PM

So right now im sitting right where i started. I have loaded the base map and burnt it to the ecu ( i know this cause i opened up MT with 0 mods and fetched it from the ecu) So is there soething im missing that would keep the ECU from sending the right shit to the engine. I have no idea and im sick of not knowing what to do. My turbo kit comes tomorrow and i want to atleast have this installed.

Ben 06-04-2007 11:16 PM

that cruise line you pulled off, there's not a gaping vac leak is there?

what's the problem, i thought you could start the car now. did you go through the timing procedure EXACTLY as written in the instructions? did you even read the instructions? is the afm on the car or removed? which version of the firmware are you using?

SKMetalworks 06-04-2007 11:45 PM

the car runs horrible. it doesnt even sound like its running on all 4 cylinders. the TIMING is ERRATIC while trying to time. there should not be a VAC leak and even so it would still run A LOT better ( i left it unpluggedw/ stock ecu and just ran a LITTLE rough. so its not that. ITs the same exact thing it runs like shit and i dont know what to do. im using 2.25 version. nothing has been removed the whole car is sto\ck.

YES i read instructions. i spend 3 days reading all the manuals that came with it. and i dont understand. i cant time the car the timing is too erratic. its something to do with the AFR because when i plug the stock ecu back in to go to work in runs like a whore for a second then runs like a champ w/ stock ecu.......

FoundSoul 06-05-2007 08:10 AM

Rather than use the base map that's in the unit at this point, which could have even gotten corrupted with all of the communications issues you fought through with Vista and your USB adapter-- go ahead and download the latest base map and load it-- http://www.megasquirtpnp.com/mspnp_downloads.htm

Then... what is different on your car from stock? Do you have any bandaids? Bigger injectors? Is the AFM removed?

Did you set 'fixed angle' to 10 degrees (not -10) in order to try setting base timing?

Please help me help you here...

SKMetalworks 06-05-2007 12:18 PM

its stock. only thing thats aftermarket right now is catback exhaust. ill try the base map. is that for the miata? 93 1.6 L?

FoundSoul 06-05-2007 12:25 PM

If it's bone stock as you mentioned the base map above should fire it right up-- no problem at all. Your unit ran my car just fine in testing (all units are tested on a live car right now) and it's a stock '91 1.6l car... it should do the same for you. I would recommend the latest map from the link above, and yes those are the maps designed specifically for the MSPNP MM9093, which is for the 1.6l 90-93 Miata. I wouldn't link you to anything else for use with the MM9093 ;).

SKMetalworks 06-05-2007 05:18 PM

how do i download it. it just opens up the code. have you had this problem before. its a 93 LE w/ abs. i have no idea what to do =/

Ben 06-05-2007 05:22 PM

What was your timing adjust procedure?

FoundSoul 06-05-2007 05:53 PM

Right click the link and choose 'save as' or 'save file as'. Then open MegaTune while connected to your MSPNP and open the new base map to load it into your MSPNP. It will ask you if you want to burn it to the MSPNP, say yes.

SKMetalworks 06-06-2007 12:50 AM

timing procedure was set the rate to +10 ( or something). then adjust using the degree angle. i didnt want to time it cause it would not stay at any number closely enough. it would jump 4-6 degrees so there was no way i could time it.

Matt Cramer 06-06-2007 08:19 AM

Did you adjust the specific setting #1 shown in this image to lock it at 10 degrees?

http://www.megasquirtpnp.com/models/...ase_timing.gif

If so, I'd like to do a bit of testing to see why the timing was so erratic. Set it to 10 degrees fixed timing, verify that you're getting the timing still jumping, and take a data log. Post the data log here or email it to me.

SKMetalworks 06-06-2007 12:28 PM

will do. i have to go to school but will do one once i get back BTW my turbo kit came and i still have some work to do on it (downpipe has cracks in it) O wellthats ebay for you

Ben 06-06-2007 12:50 PM

Is your car a 93?

Braineack 06-06-2007 12:51 PM

i believe he said it was...why?

Ben 06-06-2007 12:58 PM

93 CA car is different than federal 93. Different computer. Different wiring to the injectors (sequential).

There would have to be some wiring changes IF he has a 93 CA

At this point, I'm still betting on user error.

FoundSoul 06-06-2007 02:46 PM

Good call Ben-- we'll check this out.

sbkcocker499 - you've got mail...

SKMetalworks 06-06-2007 04:25 PM

wow ben got it right on the money . i never would of thought of that. LLOVE you:bowdown: . hope i get this thing turned around ASAP . my turbo needs some managang before i drop her in

FoundSoul 06-06-2007 07:11 PM

That was a good catch-- we should have it back to you by Friday...

Ben 06-06-2007 10:01 PM

sbk, sorry I doubted ya bud.
that's real cool of Jerry to overnight your ECU and mod it internally. I would have told you how to modify your wiring harness. :ugh2:
Jerry's solution certainly is much more elegant.

Cheers
:friday:

SKMetalworks 06-07-2007 12:13 PM

its okay. i had a feelin it wasnt my fault cause i remember swapping some ECU's with my other car and it ran crappy. i think i might have also damaged something by running it on the MS. it idles high and takes a really long time to get back to 850 even moreso when warmed up. also for a few seconds when i start my car it runs like the same which makes me believe i damaged my injectors or clogged or something

SKMetalworks 06-09-2007 09:43 PM

Eureeka. it works. thanks everyone!!!:bigtu:

magnamx-5 06-09-2007 10:07 PM

DIY autotune is doing good work glad to see you got satisfaction :D

FoundSoul 06-10-2007 01:48 PM

That's great news Stan-- As I mentioned we've got a guy over in the Phillipines with essentially the same setup but it's in a '94 car there where they continued to offer the 1.6 and it appears to be the Cali Car ECU/wiring they used on them-- he'll be excited to know this.
