How-To: Adding VSS to 1.6 Miata
This is probably pretty obvious for quite a few of you, but it took me a couple different sources to get this done so I thought I would throw something together for spoon feeding. Joe Perez had a picture up at one point but imageshack lost it.
This works for 1.6 Miatas without Cruise or Auto trans, any other Miata should already have the VSS signal passed to the ECU. For MS3x (and some Reverant ECUs) no extra circuit is needed, for earlier Megasquirts a pull-up resistor is required. This just covers the wiring from the gauge cluster to the ECU. Read here for pull-up info. Remove gauge hood (and then try and plastic weld the tabs your broke off) http://i59.tinypic.com/14njudw.jpg Remove the gauges from the car http://i62.tinypic.com/f4ixds.jpg Find the screw terminal labeled RSW http://i61.tinypic.com/zkftq0.jpg Add wire to the terminal http://i58.tinypic.com/2jbuzqp.jpg Run the wire to where your megasquirt is http://i59.tinypic.com/al0wgp.jpg http://i59.tinypic.com/2z7fvj5.jpg Leave some slack for when you want to pull the dash again: http://i57.tinypic.com/2hn1b1u.jpg Put everything back together. Wire it into the Datalog In (or tableswitch, cam in, etc) These settings worked well for me: http://i61.tinypic.com/dreger.jpg |
Big props!
I had an input and wiring at my harness to do this, I just never got around to it. |
And the gear calculation settings:

Gear calculations work. You need to set the correct tire height. OP will be edited with correct screenshot.

this is awesome, i had no idea you could do this. thanks aidan

This is also relevant to the Enhanced MS2, which also has a VSS input and current gear calculation.

Do you still not have an MS3x? That could be an issue. |

I have ms3. I think I would just need to make a 2n2222 circuit. Problem is, I think I'm out of inputs.
Rev I thought some of yours had that. |

I know this is a necro bump but... I am trying to do the same thing as this post on my 1.6 miata. I did already tapped into the back of the cluster to run a vss wire to my cruise control unit that I installed and that is verified working. I ran that wire to the megasquirt auxiliary input / output on my ms3propnp from diy. These are my settings that closely match aidandj with the exception of datalogin as the input. I don't have that input as an option. I read on diyautotune's website that my connector on my auxiliary port is L digital frequency in 2 for vss. I have that as selected in my tuner studio. Don't know why I can't get an input from my car for vss to know my speed. Anyone have any insight?
Since most people ask to post info like the tune, here it is. Any input would be great. Thanks. Attached is a photo of what I have setting wise. |
Disregard me. I am silly and was using the default tuner studio vehicle speed gauge and forgot to connect it to the vss1 input. I am rather new to this and am still learning the ways of a standalone ecu.

@aidandj The pictures are not loading. I have just begun my MS journey and VSS would be marvelous. I've found the RSW but your settings are not visible.

Yes I can, Thank you.
