I'm cheap
can I use a 1.8 throttle body, adn what adjustments will I have to make? It will save me like $50 on the FM swap kit.

With a MS ecu i dont see it making any difference, the AIC might be different and you can use TPS for once but other than that and maybe swaping the 1.8 ecu in for a base of operations it should work fine. most people change the TB to accomadate the 1.6 ecu i think.

fuck!

Will I have to wire it in differently? I don't know what to expect from the pnp since I assume the wiring is "creative" to allow for pnp. from solo miata: I had to use the 1.6 throttle body because 1.8's air idle control valve's electrical and thermal connections on the throttle body are completely different. Both throttle bodies have the same butterfly diameter of 55mm so I wasn't concerned with choking the motor. The 1.6 throttle body's mounting holes are in different locations so I had to fabricate an adapter plate to mount it to the 1.8 manifold and connect the air idle control passages. That took a whole day in itself! |
It means you're going to have to do wiring changes, or MS software changes to get it to work. If you want to stay PnP just pay the $50 for the adapter and use the 1.6 tb. Think about it this way- is it worth saving $50 to bring any grief upon yourself in the midst of this project. Spending the dough on the adapter follows the rest of the decisions you've made in this project- you're trying to avoid the DIY approach and it's risks - right? I know you've got the dough- time or money?

well i believe it might be just an issue of the plug ins not synching up as the auto 1.6's had variable tps's as well. But yeah to be safe and easy a adapter plate is the way to go.

I'd buck up for the FM coversion kit, less fucking about. You have to relocate the coils and throttle cable as well. If you can DIY go for it, but if you are crunched for time ...

I was worried about the t-body adapter availability, but they have it in stock, so I'm going to buy it now.

Hustler,
Buy AndyFloyd's Bell manifold, it's ready to rock with a 1.6 tb. F the adaptor plate. |
yeah for 200 someodd bucks you get a better manifold etall,
|
And Kelly might see some money :)

I used the 1.6 tb on a 99 manifold without the plate. Needed 1/2 it took for intercooler piping. Pictures are on my car domain site. Order the coil bracket and throttle cable bracket.

Die grinder. It is soft AL. Just go slow and test fit along the way.
