Installation help

Good Evening,

I have been lurking in the background reading about Microsquirt and its features. I am seeking some advice re its installation. Let me start by explaining what I am doing and what I hope to achieve.

I am building a kit car based on the MX5 1994-1995 1.8 engine. Whilst happy enough with a solder iron and wiring, I liked the idea of the microsquirt as it is pre assembled and sealed. I am wiring the car fresh and not using the mx5 harness. I am hoping to run COP coils from a Toyota corolla 1.8,. The engine has a Subaru WRX TD04 turbo bolted on. I have read and re read numerous times various posts about the miata/mx5 wiring but am struggling to get my head around a few things. I would be grateful if any kind souls could help me with the following;

1, With regards to the ignition,I understand the current system is a wasted spark system firing on 1& 4 and 2&3. Assuming that the igniters on the coils 1&4 and 2&3 are physically spliced together, can the microsquirt V3 fire the coils directly via the cop, with igniter, or do I need to install an amplifier such as the Bosch 0227100211 unit referred to in the Microsquirt guidance. I have seen conflicting information out there and am now confused! So much information exists for megasquirt but not to the same extent for microsquirt.

2, I assumed, wrongly it seems, that the microsquirt ecu would simply be connected to the CAS sensor , on the cylinder head, and I would obtain the crank and cam signal needed to fire the ignition system via microsquirt. Having read up on it,this may not be the case. Can anybody give me some guidance in how I go about providing the cas/cam signal to the ecu. I have read about pull up etc but am not sure exactly how to implement this.

Many thanks for your assistance and have a great xmas.

Regards

Hec

1. The megasquirt can fire the coil over plugs directly. Get rid of the stock coils.

Edit: this might be false because you have a microsquirt. I missed that. Someone else will have a better answer.

2. If I remember correctly the NA 1.8 cant use the cas sensor for some reason but I thought a trigger wheel could be retrofitted. Not sure on that though, I've got a 1.6

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I have had a look and the trigger wheel seems a fairly straight forward mod. Is this all megasquirt needs input wise with regards to timing or does it need any input on cam position?

So much info out there but its based around megasquirt not microsquirt.

cheers,
Hec

in this thread we talk about things from 2005.

also a bit of advice: I would not use aidandj's "advice"

Thanks for the reply.

I am a little confused, which about sums up my level of understanding so far, are you saying we dont discuss installations etc for for cars older that 2005?.

cheers

He's saying all your questions were either answered or solved pre-2005. Aka, when Megasquirt was becoming popular.

Toyota COP's are smart coils. You just need to give them the power, ground, and signal from MS. No ignitors, just the coil drivers in MS. Microsquirt has two, so you'll have to wire them in batch.

I don't know much about the crank/cam signal.

im saying this is a conversation that took place 10 years ago.

Nothing you intend to do: install toyota cops and/or read the CAS signals is anything special. Both are documented thoroughly.

Thanks for the assitance. I understand there is a wealth of information about Megasquirt And everything I ask has been solved pre 2005. My confusion is with the changes with Microsquirt, from which there has been further changes from the V2 to the V3 revision. There isnt much specific tothe micrsoquirt board on this forum or elsewhere. Certainly not written from the point of view that a beginner to the board could pickup straight away.

Anyway thank you for the link to the COP conversion. I just didnt want to fry my Microsquirt unit trying to power coils that were not suitable. I would rather read and pick the brains of those in the know that make a stupid mistake which could have been prevented.

Thanks again for your help I really appreciate it.

MS1, MS2, MS3, and Microsquirt can all drive toyota cops with standard ignition drivers.

Great thanks.

As for the CAS sensor query, I am informed that the 36-1 tooth wheel on the crank pulley allows for better resolution than the cas sensor . I shall go down this route one thinks!. Many thanks for your help.

Still wondering if the megasquirt / Microsquirt route might be a step far for my level of understanding! Anybody recommend any good books on the megasquirt systems which will allow me to further my understanding?

Cheers

I would not deviate from the stock CAS.

because stock works.
