KnockSenseMS sensor question
 

I can't find it anywhere on their page or this fourm..

Will the KnockSenseMS module work with ANY knock sensor? I scored a 2006 WRX STi knock sensor for free, but it only has one wire so I'm concerned if it'll even work?

Why don't you ask the guy to built it. Boris can tell you if it will work or not.
It is known to work with the Bosch sensor and the stock NB sensor.

The Miata knock sensor is a one wire sensor as well.

Does it look like the threaded sensor or the bosch style sensor?

If it's the threaded one, the hardest thing you might encounter would be finding a good place to thread it. The only reason you might have problems actually using the sensor is if it's anything like the GM sensor, it might be more sensitive than the bosch and stock miata sensor. I think this can be solved by adding a resistor in series with the sensor input line. Possibly another potentiometer so you could tune sensor sensitivity as well as circuit sensitivity in the knocksense itself.

It looks just like the bosch sensor but is only one wire.

We're (and it would be more accurate to say: my tuner and one of his mechanics :)) finishing the turbo install. When I went to check the progress this morning I asked my tuner where was he planning to install the knocksense sensor. His answer was that they'd done it on the valve cover as per the pics attached, just above the oil dipstick.

Since I don't feel like I know enough to discuss the appropriateness of such placement with my tuner I decided to ask you guys for your input so that when I go back to his shop I can give him an informed suggestion. So I ask: will I get too much noise interference if I leave it there?

You must place it on the engine block, not the head...
Preferably in the middle.(fm uses the top bold off the engine mount)
It's a simpel microphone tuned to the knock frequentie.(freq. tuning is done in the ecu)
The valve movement can cause some disturbence in the mic signal...

As is , it should work... ideal?? not really...

Thanks, that's the kind of input I'm trying to get. My tuner's argument is that the sound of any knock reverberates throughout all the engine. BTW, when you talk about the top bolt off the engine mount; is it on the coldside or the hotside of the engine?

The more research I do on this subject the more convinced I get that the way mine was installed is not a good option. I just found the knock sensor mount offered by FM.

NA's don't have the hole where NB's do?

Ideally they want to be near the top/middle/side of the engine. The trouble with putting it on the head is valve train noise will give you a constant signal, so you tune the knock sensor to ignore it, but it's filtering so much it now ignores everything and accomplishes nothing.

I have been glad to have even my simple one a few times - aside from flashing once or twice a year if I really miss a shift bad, it came on every time I got into it when I was running a front liscence plate for a week - enough to tell me both it and my intercooler are functional.
