lc-1/MSpnp super lean

Hey all, finally got the Begi S2 with the 440's fired up. The XD-16 on the LC-1 would blink E-2 once and then go on to 22.9...Ok.. So I just read through innovatives site that the temporary E-2 code on fire up is normal. As long as it only flashes once and goes away.

But this uber lean issue is killing me. I loaded the base map, adjusted for the Lc-1, 440's and no AFM, I waited until it warmed up and creeped, I mean slowly drove it down the street (couldn't resist). It won't come off of super lean. I have never touched boost.

Gotpsi was helping me get her running. He has the mspnp and Lc-1 on his miata. His is fully tuned and he is MS savvy. But we are stumped as to getting rid of the lean. He tried some tuning stuff ( I am still really really dumb on the whole tuning part) and it still stayed 22.9 on the Ms screen on my laptop.

Common ground is good...plug from o2 to lc-1 has been checked and rechecked.

Gotpsi had to retire and get back to his family and enjoying life away from me throwing things and swearing.

What kind of things should I check for?

On an LC-1 using Megasquirt (take it for what it's worth):
You have to setup the LC-1's outputs. It has 2 one is a yellow wire and it's analog one I belive. From the factory the LC-1 outputs a simulated NarrowBand signal from this wire.

Have you setup your outputs?

Mimime 08-17-2008 11:18 PM

I had similar output first setting up the Lc-1.. I did a sensor caliberation..then it was fine.

Gotpsi? 08-17-2008 11:21 PM

I helped him it worked fine the first day and then he fired it up the next and now it does not work. just says full lean and if you rev it some times it will go full rich but doesnt move most of the time.

patsmx5 08-17-2008 11:28 PM

Now the above sounds like a setting in his software is wrong.

Gotpsi? 08-17-2008 11:43 PM

I check in the configurator or what ever its called, and exhuast gas settings and all that and they are all fine. Like i said worked fine when i left his house and the next morning nothing. He didnt have solder so i crimped the conections so i thought that might be the problem but after soldering them all and still having the same problem i guess not. i check the out put with my meeter and its reading right around 5 volts going to the MS so im thinking some thing with the LC1. The code it tells us is bad sensor, or damaged sensor cable. He checked that and it all looks good.

Tuesday night will be the next available night to work on it. I will check the software settings then. We are using the brown wire to the MSpnp and the yellow wire stands free. I believe we have it set up where Analog 2 is the brown wire and going to the Mspnp. The Xd reads pretty close to the same as the Mspnp...

I was surprised to see on innovatives site, the issue with the E-2 code.

Ryan...expect a call on tuesday. Not getting home till 2030 or 2100. So probably be better off calling you on Weds (normal work hours)

Keep the ideas coming though all.

Do you know it's just a gauge problem, or did the car actually feel like it was running lean when you drove it around the block? When I replaced my NBO2 with the LC-1, with absolutely no other changes to the car, using the same .msq, it ran more poorly than I expected and required considerable retuning of the VE table.

If you're certain it's only a gauge problem, make sure you've got the LC-1's outputs configured properly with LM Programmer, and do another free air calibration. FWIW, I have the gauge ground (DB gauge though, not XD), sensor & heater ground all connected to a common wire that goes to the ECU ground at the front of the throttle body, and I haven't experienced a single problem with the LC-1 or gauge so far. But allegedly these are sensitive to grounding so it can't hurt to check your connections again.

EDIT: Upon reading the previous reply, it sounds like your connections are weird. I've got the yellow wire (output 1) going to the megasquirt and programmed for 0-5V = 10-20 AFR. The brown wire is factory configured to what the gauge needs to read correctly (DB gauge anyway, don't know specifically about the XD). I only had to reprogram Output 1 with the LM Programmer utility. From the factory, Output 1 simulates a narrowband signal, so if you hooked up the yellow wire to your gauge without reprogramming the LC-1 outputs, that would explain the gauge reading funny and going full lean to full rich when you rev it up.

I will try another free air calibration on Tuesday night. Anyone want to post the settings that it should be at on the programmer so I can double check that its right?

ScottFW 08-18-2008 12:53 AM

I just looked through the XD-16 manual, and you can disregard that crap I typed about using both the yellow and brown wires out of the LC-1, since apparently the XD gauge gets its data through the LC-1's serial out. Doh. I also learned about some other tricks the XD gauge can do, but anyway... You should only need to program the output that goes to the megasquirt for 0-5V = 10-20 AFR. Output 1 is the yellow wire, output 2 is the brown wire. Not sure if it matters which one you use and which one you leave disconnected, just make sure to tape off or otherwise insulate the unused wire.

where is the lambda sensor mounted ?
and did you follow the instructions to the letter in "first start" of the LC1

ie power up the lc1 without the sensor attached ?

also what is the red led supplied with the LC1 doing ?

me thinks the LC1 isnt installed 100% right its likely to be a simple issue

budget racer 08-18-2008 08:57 AM

sounds like it needs a free air calibration to me:dunno:

compy 08-18-2008 09:34 AM

I've heard that the full lean full rich issue indicated a failed sensor, or you have your outputs wrong.

Can you borrow another sensor to test your setup as it is? Then you can narrow down the issue.

oconnor 08-18-2008 11:36 PM

The kit did not come with a red light due to the XD-16... Pretty sure we did the install to the letter. I will try another calibration on Tuesday night...or weds night.

3barboost 08-19-2008 03:07 AM

hey before you trash the lc 1 sell it to me !

jayc72 08-19-2008 10:20 AM

My LC-1 randomly decided to do a calibration while the car was running. Result was very similar to what you describe. That was two years ago and hasn't done it since.

oconnor 08-21-2008 01:27 PM

Ok, dip shit moment here. The bolt holding the two piece BEGI down pipe came loose. Exhaust leak....lean reading...hmmm. Going to try to test it this afternoon...
This whole damn job thing is keeping me from working on my car...
