Default Errors uploading firmware

Brand new microsquirt, just finished basic assembly and got to the point where I can flash firmware. Unit is plugged into a 12V power supply and hooked to an older dell notebook via serial. Com port and serial cable are known good/working.

When attempting to flash MSII Extra 2.1.1b I get the following error
ERROR: Could not read status code, 0xFF 0x00
Press any key to continue...
Then the DOS prompt closes.

Per suggestion of Matt Cramer, I then attempted to load B&G code. It results in
Opened comm port 1 at 115200.
TX: 21 21 21 53 61 66 65 74 79 46 69 72 73 74
TX: 0d
Wake up attempted (9).
<...>
TX: 0d
Wake up attempted (0).
TX: 0d
ERROR: Timed out reading response, 0xE0
Elapsed time: 31.85 seconds
I can confirm continuity of TX/RX pins on micorsquirt board and db9. I have +5 +12 and gnd everywhere I should.

I followed the instructions re: bootjumper/power cycling explicitly.

Thoughts?

After many attempts, it finally succeeded in loading B&G code. It will connect and communicate with MegaTune.

It still will not accept the Extra firmware. It fails after the boot jumper is removed. Hmm.

Try it without the jumper, selecting no when asked if you are upgrading code

Yep - no boot jumper! Use the download-MS2-firmware.bat in the firmware folder - not the MS2 downloader program.

OK, I'll try that.

Was using the MSII DL program to flash B&G and the .bat file to flash Extra. Had the boot jumper installed and selected yes.

Tried it, no difference.

Tried to do it with 'Y' and boot jumper again. No difference.

Gave the 'Y' and boot jumper method "one last chance before getting shot" and it succeeded. ????

Haha, whatever. It's working now on 2.1.1b.
