looking in the wrong place....

You guys might think im crazy! Picked up a 97 protege ES, with 70k on it. Other then the typical mods, ive decided to put together a turbokit for it come taxtime. I feel confident in all aspects of doing it myself except the electronics. (Important stuff) Maybe im in the wrong place for this exact topic. But ive learned most of knowledge about the bp from here. cant say ive learned much on club protege. Other then nobody has an ES, so nobody builds them. And the escort gt scene is dead. I really dont feel confident in building my own ecu, and they dont make a mspnp for a protege. does anybody have any knowledge on how to make one work? my car has a distributor, the obvious difference. And the only cars around here are hondas. So no miata for comparison. Could i make a mspnp work with a dizzy delete and a Toyota cop? Or am i going at it with the wrong mindset?

Yes, with a but...

The only real challenge here is going to be arranging a proper trigger setup. I have utterly no idea what signal the stock distributor on a '97 Protege ES puts out (Mazda was still using distributors in '97?) but it may be possible to use the distributor itself (with no coil wires attached) as a trigger. You might also need to install a missing-tooth crankwheel if the distributor does not emit a useful signal.

This is a highly tentative answer. I'll do a little googling and see if I can find anything.

Looks like it's been done.

Assuming the '97 distributor is the same as '93 model, it's an Ne/G design with a 4/1 pattern:

That'll work as-is with a Megasquirt using the generic wheel code, 1 crank pulse per cycle, plus one cam pulse per cycle.

I appreciate the quick response and helpful info, i will follow up on these links!

Correction to my above post. "plus one cam pulse per cycle" should be read as "plus one cam pulse per camshaft revolution."

A minor but important distinction.

And you're not limited to COP. You could also run wasted-spark with pretty much any dual-coil pack you can fit into place. This may make physical fitment easier, as you'll retain the stock plug wires.
