Lower timing belt cover needed?

I just had a VVT NB engine built for me, and when it was received there was no timing belt cover on it. I wanted to see is the lower timing cover is needed since it has the timing marks that I would think you would need to properly tell MS where your base timing is set. Am I thinking correctly?

If so does anyone know is it possible to get the lower cover on without removing the main pulley? My guess is no based on my attempts.

No you can't install it without the valve cover, water pump pulley, crank pulley, and upper two covers removed.

If you have the front water neck completely removed for a reroute, you may be able to leave the valve cover and upper timing cover on, but you'll be bending and forcing 20 year old plastic to get it to fit, good luck.

Luckily you can leave the crank bolt in place, and just remove the 4 m6 bolts to remove the crank and gain enough access to install the cover. GL.

And yes, you'll need it to set timing. VVT shouldn't be more than a few degrees off, but I've seen as bad as 4. Not something I'd want to start with. Great time to replace the covers with new, especially if they've ever had oil leak on them.

This is a pressed on aftermarket pulley. No water neck at least. I may cut my old lower cover in half and see if that works.

Order a new one from Mazda...they are like $25 bucks

When you get it, put it in your oven at like 200 degrees for 10 to 15 min to make it flexible.

Install it and PROFIT.
