Mazda Variable TPS....

Guys just picked up one of these...

I guess i'm right in saying that the TPS on my car (92 1.6) is off the on/off variety and the Variable TPS will give a more accurate signal to the MS?

What would one achieve fitting a variable TPS over the on/off type?

And is it a 10 min bolt on jobbie or does the squirt (braineack build) require any mods?

Cheers in advance...

Yes the 92 TPS is an on/off type, take it apart and you'll see.

Which TPS do you have now? the only direct bolt on TPS is one from a 1.6 auto. the 1.8 TPS's are variable, but they won't fit easily at all. the 1.6 has a 'D' shaft whereas the 1.8 cars have two 'pins' which slot into gaps in the TPS.

Some BMW TPS's have a 'D' shaft input and will just require a mount fabbing up to hold the TPS in place.

The MS requires no modifications, you just need to hook up ground to the TPS, plus the VRef (5v) line and the TPS Signal line.

Not sure Richy, im waiting for it to be delivered.

I bought it from Jamie on Nutz but the sites down for maintenance so cant get any of the details..

I guess i'm fooked if its the 1.8 type :(

Found it -

I've been told it was fitted to a 1.6 Turbo, so should fit mine fine?

Braineack 02-22-2010 08:14 AM

Unless that was modified, there's no way to fashion that onto your existing TB.

fr3n2y 02-22-2010 08:15 AM

:(

I guess will have to wait and see when it arrives.

Braineack whats the advantage of one of these anyway?

Is it a necessary upgrade?

Braineack 02-22-2010 08:39 AM

better idle control, enrichments, and then you can use it for overrun and launch control.

Does anyone have a picture of the infamous 90-93 AT TPS? an actual part # would help.

it looks exactly like the one he posted:

the problem is, the MT TB shaft extends past the body a good 1/2" and has a half moon keyway. The TPS fits over keyway and it rotates the center section of the switch.

stock 1.6L MT TPS switch with a vtps retro fitted within it to receive the TB shaft.

The AT TB shaft, however, is recessed within the body and has a brass flat stock with the ends turned up screwed to the end up it, the vtps has a matching "tabs" that grab the brass ends and turns when the TB pushes against it.

You can pick these sensors up for $5-10 all day long, but you really can't use them without the AT TB.

After getting a DOA Wells TPS, I got a '93 AT TPS, and got fuxored again due to the shaft mismatch like you said above. Basically, I never read in any other post that you need the whole TB, I thought only the TPS from the AT would match up on the MT TB.

you can have my old auto TB....its the one that I ported and the screw came out :)

Reverant 02-23-2010 01:12 AM

What screw? I'm not really familiar with the NA TB, as I have an NB. The TB is for a friend I MSed.

Oh great! I suppose that is fixable somehow, JB Weld on the shaft and plate?

Measure your shaft :giggle: and you'll know, may need a bracket to bolt it in place may not.

It's expensive when you can pick up a BMW TPS for about a fiver though.

In the Manual said that modification is needed. Cut two resistors and doing two or three jumpers.

With the 1.6 Auto are not necesary that modifications??
I will do it in a few days and i was sure that modifications are needed.

The EXACT same part is used on an Alfa v6. I got one off eBay for £3 shipped. The shaft on the 1.6 tb is a bit too long, I had too cut 9mm off the end of it. than fab some small simple brackets to hold it in place as the holes to mount it don't line up. But is does in fact work. We do have a 7mm shaft. Even fits the stock plug (5v and signal wires need to be reversed in Brains instructions for this one)
