Megasquirt And Flipouts.

Ok I have a flipout stereo in my car. I'm wondering if I can somehow set it up to show my gauges in Megatune. That would be so cool. Anybody ever done it? What all would be involved? Seem like I'd need my laptop hooked up probably. That would suck. The stereo is a fancy Pioneer. It has like 100 different inputs in the back. Seriously. Here's some pics of the unit.

FWIW I only paid 200 bucks for this flipout used. That's why I bought it. Guy I bought it from paid 700 for it new about a year ago and needed cash.

in car pc.

you need some kind of pc to run megatune, what you have problaly doesent have much of a processor or memory.

In car PC would suck on one of those flip outs. Its not like you can control the carpc with the HU manufacturers touchscreen and the resolution would suck, all the text will be blurry. You dont need a headunit anyway, sell that thing and get a carpc.

Newbsauce's in-car pc works just fine with touchscreen, resolution is perfectly fine.

Hmm. I'm not really wanting to be able to control Megatune through the touchscreen or any of that. I just wanted to be able to flip the screen out and see my gauges. Like when you plug in your laptop and turn on megatune your 8 gauges come on. So in car PC. Hmm. Looks involved and $$$. I was hoping there was a cheap easy bastard way to make it work.

thats because he uses a VGA monitor designed specifically for that purpose, not one of those multimedia HU's

Well, the MS is open-source and its serial protocal is well-documented, so all you need to do is crack open the head unit, reverse-engineer its software and write code to accept serial data from the MS (over a serial port you'll also have to hack into the HU) and display it on the screen.

You could probably use the HU as a display for an in-car PC also. Ideally, one of those many EXT/AUX inputs will be an HD-15 VGA input. If not, find a PC with composite or S-video output.
