MegaSquirt and ODB II SMOG tesst in TX
 

I have a 96 Miata running a MSPNP and in 08 Texas change our law on how ODBII cars will be tested (see included link).

So now when they plug into your ODBII and get no DATA you fail. I am now looking into what my options are to keep my car on the road If I go from a PNP to a parallel install what errors will I get from my stock computer? I believe I am allowed 2 faults but not CEL will I be able to make this configuration work? Another option would be to use the low mileage waiver as described on this link, but I do not have any idea how hard this processes will be.

I think my last options would be to go with a computer out of a GM product or a Honda something that can be programed and adapted to work in my car.

Do any of you guys have any input on the best way to stay boosted and register in Austin, TX?

You could probably give the dude testing it $100 cash and he could find a way to make it pass. Did you go to the barrio for the inspection?

All that will do for me is give me an inspection without a SMOG test in a SMOG county, not sure how much help that will be in the long run.

I really need to know if anyone has been able to get the low mileage waiver since keep mileage under 5K a year would not be too hard.

Sounds like what you need to do, assuming you still have the stock ECU, is run the MS in parallel with it. This gets you OBDII codes but the MS controls fuel/spark.

Not sure how hard that would be with a PNP vs a regular MS, perhaps :brain: or one of the other MS gurus would know.

The :brain: suggests running on the stock ECU for one lovely afternoon of emissions testing.

Even just going back to the stock ECU will be big issues for me. The TX safety inspection requires the inspector to drive the car. So if I install a CAT put my stock injectors and reinstall the MAF. Drive the car for the 40 to 60 miles required for all of the registers to come online I still have to worry about the ass hat who drives it for the test blowing it up on his trip around the block.

Is there a way to do parallel with a MSPNP or the DIYPNP?

There's always a way, but it wont be fun. Ben did it with his DIYPNP on his 99.

Disconnect your boost controller. That way you'll only run wastegate pressure. If it's 6 or 7 psi then they can't do much damage.

Wow, that's great. So you just install the simulator connector in the car's stock connector location, mount it so it appears like stock, the inspection people plug in, and your car passes ..... even if you're running a standalone ECU.

I have a 2860 and a 3 inch exhaust I get 14 PSI with my waste gate wired open!

It looks like in TX my check engine light has to function correctly (On with the key and off after start up) and then they do a read with the engine off for status and codes. I think I am going to have to try this or get a low mileage waiver :-(

Apparently you have different rules in Austin. I take my daily to Julio Beaner and he sticks the sniffer in the gives me a sticker. I have a thug-friend who inspects the turbo car.

I was getting base of 13 psi with MSM turbo (roughly equal to 2554) and Absurdflow 3" turboback. So I had BEGI port the wastegate and machine a groove inside the turbo to encourage flow. Now, with my boost controller off, base is down to 9.0-9.5 psi depending on conditions. Some companies can make the wastegate opening even bigger because they have options for larger flappers. The bigger it goes, the lower base pressure goes closer to the turbo's own baseline. Adjusting the wastegate actuator arm length can also help. Or just disconnect it. :)

Inspection has been passed! Texas and OBDII cars do not mix! Texas does not like standalone FI systems. My next track car will be over 25 years old!
