MS pnp connection issues

i know i had this problem before but i fixed it i thought. my cars been sitting in outside for a year and just got all my turbo set up and wanted to start her up. at first i didnt know why it wasnt working cause of the dreaded COM problems. but i opened up device manager and matched the 2 COms and

"NO RESPONSE"

So i update the drivers and stil the same except that when i open megatune it does not say would u like to stay offline. it just loads right up but im not connected to the ECU.

Yes the megasquirt is on and all connections are plugged in although when its illuminated it kind of strobes and such

Also i can not fetch any info from the unit itself

anyone got any ideas for me to try

wayne_curr 01-06-2009 07:39 PM

Did you change to the correct com port in megatune itself?

SKMetalworks 01-06-2009 08:18 PM

yes

SKMetalworks 01-06-2009 09:37 PM

would downloading the latest version of megatune and reloading the firmware on the MS fix this? i have the Megatune 2.25 p1 and there is p3 available

wayne_curr 01-06-2009 09:40 PM

I'm kinda thinking that it doesn't have anything to do with your firmware and most likely not megatune either. But trying both of those wont hurt anything. I'd say double check those drivers. What adapter are you using and what OS are you running?

Toddcod 01-06-2009 09:43 PM

Are you running Vista?

Have you tried changing the number multiple times in megatune.

I had this problem with a converter cable for vista to the 9 pin.

I was going to suggest that. The only COM related issues i've every encountered with my MS were due to Vista.

SKMetalworks 01-06-2009 09:46 PM

i am using vista and i did try it a few times changing it from 4 to 15 to 9 to 2 and to 1 all with "no response" i know theres something that would fix this. should i try using another laptop and seeing if that will work??

If you have that capability then give it a shot. Also try searching for different drivers online. It usually takes me a little more fiddling to get that damn adapter working with vista as apposed to XP.

I'm really developing a strong hatred for vista. Wishing I would have just paid for the 99 dollar downgrade to XP on my new laptop.

SKMetalworks 01-06-2009 09:52 PM

lol u and me both. vista is a pain in my rear end:giggle:

im using a serial-usb adapter

Right, but is it an ebay one, a radio shack one or the one from DIY? Mostly just curious, seem to read about people having issues with the first two but i haven't had any with the one from DIY.

SKMetalworks 01-06-2009 10:09 PM

bought it from frys

wayne_curr 01-06-2009 10:13 PM

ahh, thats a venture into the unknown. I'd say try another computer or try another adapter. I'm nearly certain thats where your problem is, not megatune or firmware.

SKMetalworks 01-06-2009 10:20 PM

ill try it out
thanks :bowrofl:

SKMetalworks 01-06-2009 11:09 PM

just tried changing different COMs via MS also through the device manager. neither of them worked. so im left with getting new wires from frys

naarleven 01-07-2009 01:36 AM

I saw my friends AEM connect fine with my laptop and not connect with his. Same computer, same OS.

Try a diff comp. Who really knows the ways of windows.

Matt Cramer 01-07-2009 12:00 PM

Could you run the Port Check program and post a screen shot?

SKMetalworks 01-07-2009 08:48 PM

i did the port checker and i got as follows

COM3 Opened
9600 baud
"s"ing 's'
115200
"s"ing 's'
COM5 Opened
9600 baud

115200 baud

115200 baud

COM7 Opened

4 valid ports found

The COM that the device manager shows the serial-usb is COM5. let me know if theres something else i can do

Matt Cramer 01-08-2009 01:00 PM

What happens if you try reloading the firmware?

SKMetalworks 01-08-2009 09:56 PM

I had a problem with the registry being invalid so i deleted it and remade it so then i got to where i Do this and closed anything that could talk with the megasquirt. This is the result. i selected the correct COM port and i even tried upgrading from the standard megasquirt code and still same response

If you are upgrading from standard Megasquirt code you will need to
use the boot jumper soon. If you are upgrading from Megasquirtnspark,
DualTable, MegasquirtnEDIS or an earlier MSnS-extra this program
will do it for you.
.
If you are unsure then press Y to quit - press Q

.
. Please read the README file!!!
.
Are you upgrading from standard Megasquirt code [Y,N,Q]?N
.
This should count up to 1700+ lines
.

Press any key to continue . . .

Matt Cramer 01-09-2009 09:58 AM

You may need to try putting the boot jumper in place. Tell it you're upgrading from standard code, and when it says to put the boot jumper in place, you'll take off the top case and stick a paper clip into the two holes marked "Boot" next to the processor.

SKMetalworks 01-10-2009 12:01 AM

So i download the firmware with the boot jumper in place. i turned off the megasquirt put the cover back on and tried to connect... still no response... made sure that both COM ports were the same on Megatune as well as my computer. Its weird because if i can reboot the firmware why cant i connect to the megasquirt via megatune. any other ideas?? its like the wire is working but its not working all the way. Should i go buy a new serial-usb adapter as well as the usb extension? Is there any way to test the megasquirt? And is there a warranty on the board ( i have not soldered or modified anything on the unit ) please let me know what the next step is Thanks again for the help

SKMetalworks 02-02-2009 12:11 AM

So i just got back the megasquirt and DIY auto tune had no problems connecting to it. I bought all new wires that go from the board to my computer from DIY autotune. I even reformatted my hard drive to see if it was something virus caused. And still i cannot get that stupid Success to show up. I dont know what could of changed and im just so fed up with not being able to start my damn car. Does god hate me?

NA6C-Guy 02-02-2009 12:56 AM

God doesnt hate you, just Bill Gates. Ok, well maybe god hates you too. Hope you get it fixed.

cjsafski 02-02-2009 01:00 AM

I was setting up my ms for the first time today and had the same problem. Dunno if your doing something as dumb as i was or not. I was turning the ignition to accessory and it wouldn't connect. Once i figured out it got no power that way and switched it to "on" i could connect. Dunno if you were running the car or not. I couldn't since i built my ms and i had no .msq on it yet so i had to do it this way.

SKMetalworks 02-02-2009 01:20 AM

yea its on the on position not the accessories. And the megasquirt does flash so it is powered. Its probably something real small that i just cant figure out. i have seriously gone over the FAQ com problems thread like 10 times double checked everything. Stupid stupid stupid stupid i wanna drive my freekin car :vash::vash::vash::vash::vash::vash::vash::vash::v ash::vash::vash::vash:

SideDraft 02-02-2009 09:32 AM

I have the same problem with Vista (another Vista hater) and I use that Radioshack 64bit USB/Serial adapater, it connects to the PNP fine but won't download firmware. I have to use my XP based laptop for that.

SKMetalworks 02-02-2009 08:30 PM

im so pissed. this shit aint workin and its no ones fault but my stupid laptop im gonna take it outback and break it :firedevil

( not really but im super mad)

SKMetalworks 02-02-2009 10:27 PM

so i sourced another laptop ( my moms ) to use and still the same problems. No connection. Did the port check, did everything humanly possible to get it working. So now i ruled out the computers. If DIY autotune connected to the megasquirt and i didnt on both windows XP and Vista business WTF is missing??? Can something with the wiring harness inhibit connection? Even so all i did was splice in the middle connector for KnocksenseMS and AEM wideband. I unplugged the plug to see if that would allow it to connect. No beans... Im at the end of my rope. Im considering going another route if this does not work out.

hensonator 02-02-2009 10:35 PM

dammit i feel you man..
i have the exact same problem.. except my MSPNP doesnt flash! WTF
i know its on though because it gets warm and it has that electronic circuit board smell when its on.

SKMetalworks 02-02-2009 10:42 PM

did u send yours back to DIYautotune?

hensonator 02-02-2009 10:46 PM

Not yet. They're trying to help me out with my problem through emailing.. but it's a very slow process. I'm trying something new every night, and it seems like I'm getting a little closer every time. But I think something is wrong with the MSPNP.

Doh.. that's what I get for buying used

SKMetalworks 02-02-2009 10:49 PM

let me guess, you did the port check and nothing. You tried to reload the firmware but you couldnt connect to do it. Its gotta be the wire that connects the MS and my computer. Mine does flash though

hensonator 02-03-2009 01:16 AM

yes you are right about it all.

so you're saying it has to be the tuning cable?
are you sure..? i mean i would agree with you but my MSPNP doesnt flash =/

Just talked to Justin and he said to try and download the driver online instead of it installing manually. Virtual COM Port Drivers

Goin to try it right now. Ill let you know if it works *FINGERS CROSSED*

Fiveopac 02-04-2009 04:40 PM

I had the same problem with usb to serial cabel adapter under Vista. No connection to MS made. I've tried everything. Yesterday I've bought one of these express cards (the cheapest I could find ~20$):

http://i44.tinypic.com/260yjy9.jpg

it was recognized by vista as "usb to com" (although its express card) with prolific chip (the same as in usb-com cabel) however the connection to MS was made at first atempt. So trash those cabels and buy one of those cards (for notebooks with express card slot of course). No problems since then :)

SKMetalworks 02-06-2009 12:41 AM

Went to Frys electronics and they didnt have any. I was suprised:vash: i ordered one from hong kong lol i sure hope it works thanks for the tip

The COM that the device manager shows the serial-usb is COM5. let me know if theres something else i can do

Okay.....I had this same issue when getting mine to communicate as well. Basically, the MS unit can't work with any ports that are higher than let's say a COM10. You have four ports that are working there under that value. Go into your Device Manager and manually change the Port Setting of your device under Advanced Settings (this is assuming you have all the correct drivers loaded for your cable.....i.e. it should show like a Radioshack or whatever brand cable when you open up Device Manager and check under COM ports). Change the Port Setting to match one of your open ports that are under COM10....use COM3 for example in your case.

After that, go into Megatune (Make sure the unit is powered on....turn your KEY to the ON position not ACC) > Go to the Communications Drop Down Menu > Then match the COM Port with the one you selected under device manager....in this case COM3. Test the connection....if success. Go back to the home screen of Megatune > Then go to File > and click to go back ONLINE.

Start your engine, check, and this should solve the issue with the connection. Vista was the only OS that gave me this issue as well....you HAVE to change the port setting under advanced settings manually or it wouldn't work.

Have fun and let us know if this worked.

I have tried every single com port from 1-30

none will work. of course i matched them

K, I just got the express card and it still wont connect. Ugg im so pissed. Ive spent around 100$ just trying to get it running with new wires express card shipping. im at my wits end. Could wiring in the car cause me not to connect to the megasquirt? I have tried multiple computers both Vista and XP 3 different connection choices. What else could it be? Yes i have service pack 1 on my laptop.

Is there any place that will figure out why i cant connect? Maybe a shop or something?

poobs 10-22-2009 06:10 PM

How did this saga turn out ?

SKMetalworks 10-22-2009 08:05 PM

Turned out great! Got it working after i changed my igniter and plugged back in the fuel pump fuse.

poobs 10-22-2009 08:08 PM

Cool but didn't you have problems with the lap top talking to ?
