MS2 on 99/00 N/A - fuel only or fuel and spark...?
 

Hi,

I didn't want to hijack the other 99/00 MS2 N/A thread so I do an extra one.

As I sold my old MS2 parallel setup to a friend running his 99/00 N/A I came to the following question:
(Just a remark to why he likes to be running on MS. He has displaced the Euro 1,6 99/00 with a 1,9 99/00 engine but is running on the old 1,6 ECU - so the engine is running rather rich and he isn't able to switch the VICS with the OEM 1,6 ECU. And maybe he is planning to go IRTB)

Should/Could I leave ignition at the OEM ECU - so the OEM knocksensor would still work? Or take the ignition also from the MS2 and loose the OEM knock-sensor.

I think I would still have to set the trigger angle - to get the fueling right, or not? (The angle doesn't change much with MS2 and OEM sensors anyway)

If he runs N/A, then leave the ignition alone. On NBs, the idle is controlled by both the idle valve as well as the ignition advance. These work in harmony, so if you switch the ignition to the MS the idle will oscillate with any load (A/C, headlights, any electrical load). Also, unless you add a knock circuit, there will be no knock retard. Btw the stock ignition advance is pretty good. Leave it there.

So that leaves the question - how do I set the timing with no ignition attached - or do I even have to? How is the injection timing handled?

Ignition timing is handled by the stock ECU. Injection timing - you can't set it with the MS2E V2.x firmware, it is hardcoded. Injection timing is only possible with the alpha 3.X code and semi/sequential, where you set arbitrary values (guestimations) in degrees by trial and error and stop when you are happy with the results.

When the injection timing is hardcoded - it has to have a trigger, right? So I would at least have to set the timing in any way.

As I said in the original post - timing with OEM sensors is quite close at the 99/00 we all have seen values between 4° and 5.5° trigger angle. So I suppose I could just leave it there..
