MS2 build questions
 

Hello all, I've been lurking on the forums for years, and I’m finally in a position to do a proper turbo build on my otherwise stock-motor ‘01, starting with a MS. I've decided that I'll have to do a parallel install to pass OBD-II inspection (yearly) and to retain VVT control without buying a very expensive ECU. I would plan to leave the stock ECU to control everything but fuel and spark.

I know most have moved onto MS3, but it seems I wouldn't use any of the new features, and I was under the impression that the MS2 can be built into a smaller case and it’s a bit cheaper. For what I’m planning to do with it, I was wondering if I could just buy one of the pre-built MS2s straight from diyautotune, like this one. Or one of the kits.

So, other than a MS harness and a factory harness extension, are these kits really all I need to get my car running a parallel setup? I know these are supposed to run on a variety of cars, so are there any modifications to these that are necessary to run them on an ‘01 miata?

Okay, I did some more digging and found a number of places it's mentioned that the standard MS2 kits need to be modded to run on a miata. Problem is, I can't seem to find any clear instructions for those changes. They either reference just a MSI, or are specific to a DIYPNP. Does anybody know of any mod instructions for a standard MS2 to work for an '01? Or is this just an unsupported platform, and I need to move on to MS3?

I built that kit for my '99. I don't have VVT, though. Yes, it is possible, with a patch harness, to get the kit you link to run in parallel. No, the parallel install does not offer any OBD-II advantage. Yes, it does make things easier getting started to just control spark and fuel. Yes, you will need to modify it. The mod information is documented in the megasquirt stickies. Yes, it is smaller and cheaper than the MS3.

Thanks for the response, I really appreciate it. I did read completely through all of the stickies, as well as hours of searching, and I still haven't found anything that documents the changes for a non-DIYPNP kit that I would need for the '01+. Since I'm letting the stock ECU control pretty much everything else, can I just follow the instructions for a DIYPNP kit for 99-00, and just ignore the instructions about the main connector?

Update:

A representative at diyautotune sent me an e-mail saying that the MS3+X kit requires no mods to work for the '01-05, so that may be the best option. It seems like a lot of people are just buying the MS3s pre-assembled. Does anybody here have experience with building their own MS3?
