MS2 Ignition problems
 

Alright, I built an MS2 last winter and am finally getting around to installing it in the car. It's an all stock 95 miata. I built the MS2 with the mods on the wiki page (http://miataturbo.wikidot.com/ms2-a) and the fan relay control.

So, I have the coils unplugged and I was testing them to see if I was getting a signal on both of them. The passenger side coil(BR/Y miata, pin 31 - D14 MS) is getting a signal and firing but the drivers side (BR miata, pin 36 - D16) is not. I also checked for a signal on pin8 of the MS2 daughterboard, PM4, to see if it was outputting anything and it's not. Is there a setting somewhere that I have to tell the MS that D16 is also an ignition output? Reading through the MSextra manual it doesn't seem so (http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/MS2-Extra_4g63.htm).

Be sure you've set "number of coils" to "wasted spark" to enable the second output.

So, I would assume my ignotiong settings are correct. 4G63, falling edge, inverted, wasted spark, d14.

I have it hooked up to a function generator on pin 24 and an oscope on pin 7 and 8 on the ms2 board right now and im still getting nothing out of pin 8. I've checked all my solder joints and nothing seems to change. I don't know what to do.

Do you have an RPM reading?
Do you have a scope shot of your simulated CMP and CKP signals?
Do you have spark on both outputs in ignition test mode?

I was getting RPM. I just left the lab though, so I don't have any captures. And I didn't try ignition test mode. I'll do that tomorrow afternoon and post back here with those results and captures.

So I have it hooked up again, and I'm getting signal using the ignition test mode. But now I'm actually reading up on the CAS. It's got two signals, CKP and CMP like you told me to look for.

How is the RPM calculated? Is it just off of CKP? I had only been running a signal on pin 24 and not 25, but I was still getting RPM. I can't really figure out how to get a signal that would match the uneven pulse width for the CMP signal, so I don't think I can accurately replicate the signal using a function generator.

Would not getting a signal on CMP cause only one signal to fire? I'm checking over my hall effect sensor circuit now, and then I'm going to try and get a scope out to the car and see if I'm getting signal on both CMP and CKP.

Hmm... How big of an issue would it be if I didn't switch R12 from 390 to 470? I could have sworn I made that change, but apparently not. I'm going to have to go home to see if I can find the 470 resistor, but could that be the cause?

Suppose I should update you guys and anyone else who searches this out...

I forgot to hook up S12C to JS9. It wasn't in the pictures on the MS2 mods, but rather in the text above it. Just blew right over it. Hooked it up, and it fired right up. Straight from the megamanual:
Note 2: Jumper location JS9 (pin 16) tied to +12V for MS-II CPU board implementation for enabling IAC stepper driver.

Now I'm out and about tuning it. It's running without too many issues. Idle is a little low on warm start up, can't idle with the A/C, and my wideband is pretty noisy... But, at least she runs! When I get some time at the end of the week, I'll probably redo the grounds for the wideband and maybe check out that MS2 firmware that has A/C idle code in it.
