MS2 with Toyota COP

Well i switched over to the toyota coil on plug conversion. I acquired it from a friend running MS1 plug n play that learned he couldnt use it for autox. Its basically a faux ignitor plug with wiring coming out of it and plugs into the oem connector for the ignitor. This was great since i was running the oem ignitor on my MS2. But now my tach doesnt work.

Do i need to build that little circuit that pulls the two ignition signals together to form a tach signal? or is there an alternative method of pulling tach?

crap, i cant even find the circuit i was thinking off. basically combines the two ignition signals into one for a tach output

Not sure why your tach doest work. When wired into the ignitor properly it should be 100% plug and play, including a working tach.

Any pics of the wiring to the cops, and the ignitor? The 3rd wire from the left on the connectors is the tach signal, and it looks like its wired...

Check this for the schematics

it doesnt have an ignitor anymore. The cop plugs into the wire that used to plug into the ignitor. I am also running a standalone MS2 v3 (not a pnp) so there was no signal from the ecu or anything. Basically, the two ignition signal wires run to 2 coils each for batch fire, then a power wire, then it seems like it should be fine since there is a wire that was connected to the yellow wire through the plug but it reads steady...

on the stock coils and ignitor i had the blk/wht ran with 12v for pullup and the yellow/blue ran tach fine.

Now, I get no tach signal at all. I do have

Yeah a gutted ignitor. Wired to the cops like so.

Based on the writeup, if the tach doesnt work then it suggests to put a 1k resistor from IG- to B+ in the diagnostic box.

I've done the same, no tach at the begining, I put a resistor in the diag box and the tach came back in the gauge cluster. It's working fine for 1 year like that

Whizbang 04-26-2013 07:23 PM

you mean the proto area?

curly 04-26-2013 08:24 PM

No, the stock diagnostic box located by the driver's fender. Flip the cover and put a resistor between IG- and B+

Whizbang 04-27-2013 02:13 AM

maybe i should reiterate that this is a standalone MS2 with no original provisions for anything and in an rx7

Yup. If its a bp in an rx7 though, he probably doesn't have that box.

give them back to your friend and tell him to man up and stop worrying about a class he'll never trophy in.

Whizbang 04-27-2013 11:24 AM

actually he usually places 1st or 2nd at regional events for his class.

that said, once again, this was a MS2 with a diyautotune harness without anything other than occasional pieces of the engine harness to go to the CAS, what used to be an ignitor, and the fuel injectors. There is no box.

Yeah, make the tachout circuit in the proto area and wire it to the cluster.

Lets see pictures of this motor in the car.

looking at the tach out options, anyone have some ideas of where to start? hell of a difference between 1k and 10k or 50k....

not really sure what the two resistor options really affect...
