MS2E: Runs well, but won't rev past 4000 rpms

I recently installed a Rev built MS2E into my 2003. I've spent the last week tweaking things, and I've finally gotten it to where it will start pretty consistenly (sometimes it cranks for a second or two first), and it idles and runs well. However, when I try to rev it up, it stops at about 4-4.5k, depending on the gear. My fuel and spark tables seem to be pretty reaonable compared to what most people on here are running, so I'm at a loss as to where to go at this point. I've attached my .msq; could someone please look it over and see if it seems reasonable?

Also, on a possibly unrelated note, when I run data logger for more than a few minutes, the engine starts cutting out at regular intervals...has anyone else experienced that?

Thanks!

Where's the datalog?

I was going to post one in the original post, and then realized that I was using the composite logger. I figured out how to make a real datalog and just made a run. I reved it up to 4000 in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears, and each time it stopped around 4000 rpms. I've also made some changes to the fuel map because I thought maybe it was just putting too much fuel in (the AFRs go very rich at the same as it quits accelerating), but it didn't make any difference. I also changed the spark map to be more like another one that I found on the forum, but it didn't seem to change anything either.

Thanks for looking into it!

Looks like it is running really rich, although I don't think that would keep it from going past 4000rpm. It is not misifiring either, as that would show as lean spikes in the AFR.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary in the msq either.

Hmm...well, that's not good. I pulled a bunch of fuel out of the 4000 rpm range, and it still seems to go really rich when it gets to that point. Any other ideas for how I can trouble shoot it?

Which wideband do you have?

Engi-ninja 04-12-2014 04:49 PM

I have the AEM UEGO wideband.

Engi-ninja 04-12-2014 04:53 PM

I selected the AEM -30-42xx in the AFR calibration; should I try the other one?

Reverant 04-13-2014 05:32 AM

No, that's the one.

If you AFRs are "good" and the car doesn't misfire (no lean spikes), then the only logical explanation would be spark advance. The log doesn't show anything unusual; does the car pass 4000rpm if you rev it in neutral?

Engi-ninja 04-14-2014 10:12 AM

The AFRs are good at low RPM, but they seem to become very rich it gets up around 3500-4000 RPMs. I had to put it back to stock over the weekend to make a little road trip, but I'll hook the MS and wideband back up this week and see if it will rev past 4000 in neutral.

All the maps that came with the base tune were originally set up for boost; they all went up to 240 kpa. Once I realized that, I tried to scale all the maps to correspond to naturally aspirated conditions; and now that I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that before I did that, it didn't have an issue with revving past 4000. So, I guess it must have something to do with the way I changed the fuel and spark tables. I can re-load the original base tune again and double check that it revs like normal. You said that you looked at the tune file though, right, and it looked reasonable?

Also, the car has VVT, but I don't have a VVtuner yet. I wanted to get the MS working correctly first. Could that have something to do with it? I thought brain said in his MS3x build post that the cars should run fine without VVT, you just lose area under the torque cruve.

Ok, so today I hooked the MS back up, and tried revving it in neutral, and it revved past 4000 slowly, and then stopped completely at 5000. However, I then reset my tune back to the base tune I started with, which has everything scaled for boost. I left it all scaled for boost, but I changed the non-boosted part of the ignition map to be not retarded at higher pressure. Then I took it for a spin, and it revved past 4000 no problem.

So, here are my current settings, along with a shot of the datalog. For the ignition map, I started with values that seemed common to other NA maps I found on here, and I pulled them back 1 or 2 degrees everywhere. Would anyone mind looking at them and see if they're reasonable?

Thanks!
