Ms3 MS3x on a MSM

Anyone got a basemap for a msm? Car is basically stock with a set of supra 305s, and ebay downpipe. I've about got the ms3 ready, hoping to get everything tested and maybe a rough tune tomorrow.

I keep forgetting to order parts for the alternator control circuit... so we're going to be a bit limited, hoping to get it roughly ready off the battery, then build the alt circuit this week and give the ECU back to them in time for the Autocross next weekend.... Probably a bit ambitious, but if everything goes well why not try?

I've roughly followed Frank Devocht's guide, which is obviously setup for a VVT NB, and I'm wondering what people do for EBC control. We've got a GM EBC, was hoping to splice into the factory EBC wires but it looks like the ECU switches 12v instead of ground. bastards. Does everyone just run new wires for it?

Also VTCS... Does it default to open or closed? I.e. do I need to worry about controling it for now?

not sure on the ebc, if its really switching 12v (that doesn't make sense to me)

VTCS would be simple using a spare INJ output on the expander.

The ECU diagram from your site says that its switched 12v... Does seem a bit silly though.

Fun note: 04s (at least) aren't wired for power like the 01s are... Frank's instructions don't mention at all that you have to turn the Main Relay on for these later cars... 4s is key switch on power, 4AF is in fact a red/white that doesn't have power till you ground 3h to turn the main relay on.
Wish I had had the factory ecu diagram when I built the harness, as is I looked like a fool until I traced where the black/white (key-on 12v) source actually made it to the ecu.

So... whats the preferred way to flip the main relay on? I'm thinking i'll just use a spare pin on the ms3x to say if coolant > -120 or something and just have it always on... I would try the Fuel pump driver, but don't want to burn it out... Actually, you'd never get crank/cam signal to bring up the rpm to trigger the FP relay if the cam and crank signals don't have their 12v turned on....

Braineack 04-30-2012 09:58 AM

the ECU grounds the relay through pin 3H. So ground 3H and that should do it.

You'll have power through 4AF.

ianferrell 04-30-2012 10:10 AM

The problem with that is the other side of that relay is always hot... So if you just run that pin to a ground the main relay will never turn off.

let me look at diagram again, but im positive that's all Reverant does for his MSM units.

EDIT: I dont think the diagram is correct by showing A and C on the main relay connecting.

However, you are wrong. :brain:

I'm not looking at the diagram, but you wouldn't want the relay coil to be live the whole time. It would add to the dark current that discharges the battery when the car is off.

well fess up jabrony. I remember that being something we had to do for Stephanie's MSM unit. I guess it worked, but led to a dark current with key off?

Using an INJ output on the ms3x then would be an easy fix.

Reverant 04-30-2012 10:56 AM

Stephanie's MSM was a race car, so that solution was OK for them. I have a different solution for the daily driver MSM.

Braineack 04-30-2012 11:06 AM

I bet Ian would like to know...lolzlsalfdkslkjfgawgsadskates.

Reverant 04-30-2012 11:29 AM

There's no fun in getting spoonfed.

Braineack 04-30-2012 11:34 AM

tell that to Ian. lolz.

but if it were me, I'd just use a spare INJ output to turn on the relay...

Sounds like this is still the best/easy idea... Just need something that says 'if ecu is on ground this pin'... Plenty of spare outputs to play with on ms3x.

Braineack 04-30-2012 11:54 AM

you can just default the output to being on normally. don teven think you need any conditioners.

so active, the like 1 | 0 for the settings.

most would be 0 | 1 and then a condition to turn on.

ianferrell 04-30-2012 12:11 PM

Ah... easy cheesy, haven't looked at that dialog box in a while. Now if I could just sweet talk reverant into sending me a basemap :)

Braineack 04-30-2012 12:13 PM

does Reverant even have an MS3 MSM basemap? he would for his enhanced MS2 junk...

but anyways, load beta21.

WestfieldMX5 05-03-2012 10:04 AM

I'll add this information to my how to.
So, if I understand correctly, 4S is the 12V ign source for the MS and a spare output is used to ground 3H once the ignition is turned on?
4AF is not used by the MS then?
