MS3 and USB connection
Has anyone here managed to communicate using a USB Type A to USB Type B cable?
TunerStudio will detect something, but when I try to connect it fails. I can connect using a USB>Serial converter and the serial interface, but I don't particularly want to, I want to use the on board USB interface! |
never had issues. i just had one on the stim today using the USB. I've Always used it from the start in 2o10.
|
I have always used it with no prior setup or issues...
|
How odd :(
Both using windows 7? I've tried two PCs now, one 64bit windows 7 the other 32bit, same result. |
vista and 7, yes.
|
FML
The 32 bit Win7 laptop is a fresh build too |
Funny enough, I never use the onboard USB as my workstation has a true serial port (and performing the firmware upgrade through the USB sometimes fails for no apparent reason, so I don't bother at all).
|
Blimey, how old is your workstation :P
I don't have any kit with a genuine serial port |
$5,000 HP Workstation has everything.
|
So any thoughts as to why I'm having difficulties?
I can confirm that my JimStim is fine, it connects my MSII to both my desktop and the laptop via the USB>Serial converter, it's powered by a mains power supply (12v, 1000ma). MS3 will not connect via Stim, either via the serial port or the on board USB. However MS3 will connect via the Serial port only when plugged into the car, on board USB does diddly squat. I hate working in the car with the ignition on, the laptop battery isn't brilliant, and it's just comfier and warmer inside. |
no freaking clue, is it having trouble with the drivers?
|
Possibly, but I've tried re-installing till I'm blue in the face
I used these drivers/followed the instructions to the letter, any alternatives? Megasquirt MS3 Serial Setup http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM20814_Setup.exe |
Have you tried more than one USB cable? Is the MS end loose at all? Mine worked fine until I started moving the MS around, then it would disconnect until I reconnected the cable or power cycled the MS. Found that the MS end was slightly loose and a bit of pressure in the right direction would allow it to reconnect.

go pillage your printers!
|
I have a printer cable I'm planning to use with this ms3x, hopefully it doesn't flip out like yours.
Good luck OP, keep us updated on the fix if you find one. I'm hoping this is a one-off driver issue. I've had those before on other tuning platforms |
You know I've only tried the one cable, I just assumed it would be fine, it's not loose in any way.
I'll see if I can find an alternative to test - surprisingly they're like hens teeth in my house :( |
I read through this thread and maybe i missed it, but how did you go about detecting the port in tuner studio?
When you plug in the USB cable (plug in the MegaSquirt first), does windows play a notification sound to alert you a USB device has been plugged in? |

Or when you're creating a new project and you're not sure what firmware you have and you can let TunerStudio detect it. Either way it detects something, but not a MS3. When you plug in the USB cable (plug in the MegaSquirt first), does windows play a notification sound to alert you a USB device has been plugged in? |
how are you powering on the unit? are you using the stim? or is it already in the car?
i know these may be simple questions, but it will better help me determine what kind of problem you may have. |

i know these may be simple questions, but it will better help me determine what kind of problem you may have. I have a JimStim, that's powered by a mains powered power supply (set at 12v 1000ma), I've confirmed the JimStim isn't faulty as it powers up and lets me connect to my MSII fine (via my USB>Serial converter). When the MSIII is on the car I get nothing from the USB, it doesn't even detect, let alone connect, however when on the car I can connect via the Serial port (USB>Serial converter as used on my MSII). When powered via the JimStim USB is detected but won't connect, but to further muddy the water will not connect via the USB>Serial converter. This behaviour doesn't change when using my PC or a laptop, the PC is running Win7, as is the Laptop, however the laptop is freshly rebuilt. Many thanks |
