Default installed MSPNP, it ran. tried to adjust timing, wont stay running?

just puchased a MSPNP. well i installed it today, and it idled a little rough, but it was in the 850 range, nothing to be worried about before tuning i assume.

heres the weird part. i had my timing set for 14* but in the installation instructions, it says to set it back to 10* before adjusting anything on the unit and that if i wanted to adjust timing i could do it from the software (not looking at the instructions, please correct me if im wrong). so i hooked up the timing light connected GND and TEN blah blah blah. the timing light wouldnt keep a consistant blink, it would blink then shut off, then blink more, then shut off etc. so i just go by what it shows while its blinking (it was showing about 14*) i turned the CAS making the part that u push on go downwards, then i realized that i did not remember which way to turn it to retard the timing and which way to advance it. so i turned the car off (the fumes from it running rich from the lack of being tuned was killing me) and went online to look it up and couldnt find it. so i decide i'll just look at the indicator to see if i were advancing it or retarding it. i go to turn on the car, it will start, then immediately just die. no jerks or anything, the RPM's just drop to zero. it will stay running if i rev it, but not if it tries to just idle. it also doesnt seem to blow as much smoke when i rev it so im thinking that its not running as rich as before.

any ideas?

You set the static timing to 10 from the normal -10, right?

no no no! You don't use the Datalink connector to set the timing anymore!!
Go into megatune and remove the idle advance there!!!

As indicated there, change the "-10" to "10" and burn. That will remove idle advance, then adjust the top number (shown as 65 degrees above) until your light reads 10* then set the 10 back to -10. Make sure "Trigger angle addition" is set to 0. Burn, Save.

Word of advice.. Never, EVER, EVER, EVVVVVER!!!! change inverted spark to "YES." NEVER!!

ok, i've done all of that now. timing is good, but its still not wanting to idle. i've figured out that if i rev it up to about 2000 rpms, and very slowly let off the gas down to about 1000 rpms then let off, it will have trouble, but then will idle very very rough bouncing down then up to about 950-1000 then back down to about 650-750 then back up. i revved it up to 2000 and held it there, it would do the same thing, but at higher rpms obviously.

seems to be running a little rich as there is some smoke coming out of the exhaust. which i believe (but could be wrong about) could mess up my idle. i know im gonna get obnoxious here and sound like the newb that i am, but heres my question, how do i lean it out a bit with megatune?

EDIT: i think i found my answer. do i go to the engine constants and adjust the a/f ratio?

I've been using MegaLogViewer and it works fantastic!

Worth a shot.. You just have to read and tinker, thats basically what I did.

when i first installed my ms when it was idling it did the same thing the first time i started it up and it smelled like straight gas but it was to lean and just spitting out unburnt gas so you might not be rich just my 2 cents

How can you connect something like this to your car and not read the bloody manual?

My advice is to read DIY's installation instructions carefully. They are comprehensive and if you get stuck they offer the best support via e-mail I have ever experienced. A lot of people here on this board are pretty techie and they forget that for some people this stuff can be difficult (I have worked in IT for 20 years and I still have to work through a lot of things slowly). I am not trying to scare you, but if you don't understand what you're doing you could have an engine damaging experience. The DIY Website even had a video talking you through how to set the timing.

My experience with idling (and I'm still trying to get it right) is that a really cranky bouncy idle happens when it's running too lean.

ok so i sold this kid his MSPNP...i live close by and know him so im letting him make payments i sold it to him for $500..he's given me $200 so far....he seems to think that any damage that he's done to his car b/c he didnt have a vaccum source hooked up to his map sensor is my fault because "i sold him a MSPNP and didnt include the vaccum hose so that made it seem like it was an optional part to him" how stupid does this sound to everyone here? and what does everyone think i should do in the event that the 17 year old dont pay up the other $300....?

brian, dude, relax. i told u im getting u the rest of your money, u dont need to take this on the forum. and i've got the car running fine now in case anyone actually cares about that.

EDIT: since we're wondering what the people on here think of things. what do you guys think about this kid getting my brother's phone number off of his website for his spec miata racing and then calling him asking for my home phone #. keep in mind this is after we got into an argument about him not including the MAP vacuum line and then that being resoved by saying that he would get all of his money minus the cost of the vacuum line.

IMO, this is completely wrong
