MSPNP not reading RPM

burnt my ignitor, replaced it now the tach in my dash works but ms doesn't read rpm, stays at zero and blips something every few seconds. is my new ignitor half broken or could it be my megasquirt?

cjernigan 04-29-2008 08:04 PM

Did you change anything in the MSQ or possibly knock a ground off while installing the ignitor? It's possible that the msq or firmware corrupted when you were attempting to run the car with the bad ignitor.

Mach929 04-29-2008 08:13 PM

i all i did was plug the new one in, maybe firmware got corrupted i'll make a new msq i guess

cjernigan 04-29-2008 08:28 PM

Just reflash with the original MSPNP msq.

Mach929 04-29-2008 08:56 PM

i loaded up my original MSPNP base map and copied all my values manually and saved the msq, loaded into MS... still no dice. i think something's physically broken but i don't know what it is. what sends RPM signal to ecu on a 1.6, the ignitor sends it to the tach, i guess the cas sends it to the ecu?

Braineack 04-29-2008 08:58 PM

phil, send me $$$ for shipping and I can get you know a known good one out to you.

cjernigan 04-29-2008 08:59 PM

The CAS sends the tach signal directly to the MSPNP. It has two outputs that are both received by the MS.

are you referring to an ignitor or a cas?

Braineack 04-29-2008 09:07 PM

well actually both are in teh trunk of the wrong car, so i woudlnt be able to ship anything out.

Mach929 05-05-2008 06:20 PM

swapped in new cas, still no fucking RPM. this blows, is my MSPNP broken?

Stealth97 05-05-2008 06:26 PM

I thought that the tach on the <95.5 were driven by the coils.

Braineack 05-05-2008 06:28 PM

nope the CAS NE signal.

Joe Perez 05-05-2008 06:40 PM

On the '90-'93, the dash tach is driven by the igniter.

On the '94-'95.5, the dash tach is driven by the coils.

From the '92 FSM:

In either case, this is different from the RPM signal on the MS. That is generated based on the CKP/CMP inputs from the CAS.

If you're seeing activity on the dash tach, and it looks realistic, that means that the coils are firing, which means the MS is doing something.

Mach929 05-05-2008 06:42 PM

yes my dash has RPM but the laptop connected megasquirt shows rpm at zero and every few seconds blips to some abritrary number for a millisecond and then back to zero.

Joe Perez 05-05-2008 06:47 PM

I guess I should ask- is the engine running?

It's quite possible something is wrong in Megatune, possibly the gauge config in the msns-extra.ini file.

If you look at a log in MLV, do you see RPM there?

Mach929 05-05-2008 06:56 PM

yeah it will start up but ms seems to have no idea what the rpm is

haven't tried mlv, let me run out and see

Braineack 05-05-2008 07:05 PM

it shouldnt run at all with no rpm signal.

Mach929 05-05-2008 07:07 PM

mlv doesn't show rpm either, you can see the periodic blips in this log.

Joe Perez 05-05-2008 07:08 PM

That's what was hanging me up.

I think the OP is saying that it does run, and he sees the dash tach OK, but MegaTune is not giving him an RPM indication on the virtual dash.

That, to me, sounds like a MegaTune problem. Either his msns-extra.ini is corrupt, or he's having serial comm issues, or something along those lines. Which is why I'm curious to see what MLV makes of a log.

Edit He beat me to it.

Mach929 05-05-2008 07:08 PM

i don't know man it starts up no problem
