How will any dyno shop know what to set for the spark map??

Spark is tuned by seeing what produces the most power. The map I gave you should be really close, within a few degrees.

Yeah, but if it produces the most power then won't it be high and have more of a chance for detonation?? I want to play it safe on my car. I will compare your spark map to the one I have now and see what it looks like. Jerry told me to pull 3 degrees or so from the map above 100kpa and it might be good. Right now I am dealing with grounding issues on the low z injectors.

Pulling 3 degrees above 100kpa from Savingtons map was a suggestion to get you to what 'should' be a safe starting point, so it can be properly dyno tuned from there. The only way to properly tune ignition timing is on a steady state dyno, like a Dyno Dynamics, DynaPack, or Mustang, and some others (those are my favorites). To tell you how would get outside the scope of this conversation and into what can get to be a big one, there are classes for that sort of thing, but Sav's statement covered it at a very high level. But if the tuner knows his stuff, and you're on a proper dyno, and the engine is in good shape and well maintained, then tuning the ignition properly on a dyno, to make maximum power, will not induce knock; and it's the only way to do it right and get the most out of your tune, not just under WOT, but in all conditions.

EDIT-- If you want the tuner to, they can find optimum ignition timing, but then pull a bit back out. You'll leave a little power on the table, and won't be any safer 'on the same fuel in the same conditions' -- but if you get bad fuel, or conditions radically change, it could give you a bit of a safety buffer... Some tuners will do this by default. Some will give you the best numbers they can safety be darned. Some will tune for the best numbers to buff your ego, but then pull a degree or two before you pull away with or without saying anything to provide that 'bad gas safety buffer'.

Thanks for the help guys, and I have called around to find out that siastuning.com is the man to call for tuning around here. That is what Mustang Ranch told me. We will see....

Based on the dyno charts posted on their site they have a DynoJet dyno-- most of these are straight inertia dynos. Some have eddy-current brakes and can do steady state tuning, I've not used a steady-state capable DynoJet so I couldn't comment, but they should do the trick, as long as that's what their working with.

If it's a straight inertia dyno-- They can tune WOT only, and not ideally as they can't adjust load to set it to realistic levels for the car on the street-- it's just turning a big heavy drum and it is what it is.

That doesn't mean they don't have a good rep-- and may do a great job at WOT tuning by 'playing it safe', but there's alot more to fully dialing in a map that you just can't do on a cheap, er, um, pure inertia dyno.

Yeah, I think that siaztuning will go wherever you want for the dyno and I would go to mustang ranch. They do have a mustang dyno.

Just checking in to see how this went. I have an MSPNP9093 and am also looking for a MS saavy tuner/dyno shop in the SF Bay Area.

I have yet to hear back from siastuning.com. I did a tune myself for the track day and still want to get some dyno time. Maybe if we can get a few guys from around the bay area we can do a group deal?? Let me know what you think.

Thanks for your response.
For me it would be great to get dyno time with a tuner who knows the MS platform (I am too new at this to just hop on a dyno and start tweaking, well, I should say, I am too new at this to do that again). Tuning with the VE analyzer was pretty straightforward, in fact the whole MS platform seems very straightforward (at least the MSPNP version), but the car clearly needs adjustment on a dyno with someone who knows what they are doing.
Finding a eddy load dyno was not hard but finding a shop that is MS savvy/friendly proved more of a challenge, at least for me.

A group deal would be great but my first priority is to identify someone competent to help with the process.

I'll keep looking and will post if I find someone good (at this point I am willing to drive well outside the Bay Area if the right person/dyno is identified).

So I ended up going down South and had Shawn Church of Church Automotive tune my car (some folk down South told me he was the man for MSPNP tuning so I drove down a couple of weeks ago, I live in the Bay Area). He definitely knew the MS platform and clearly knew the Miata (even something as basic as knowing where to properly jack the car).
I have Hi Res code and he took my laptop and went to work (unlike the prior tuner who spent much of the time learning the interface).

They were a little surprised at the low numbers (~ 205rwhp with it peaking at just over 6krpm) given my set up and I am looking for issues (like exhaust restrictions possibly, I have a custom dual with 2.5 inch Magnaflow muffler and resonator and high flow 2.5 inch cat).

They were very helpful, they put on their own MBC and tuned with it to show me the difference (and I then ordered one as i have never spun my tires before, nor slipped the clutch). Shawn is a bright guy and was very personable and apparently has a very good reputation in the mod community - I cannot speak to his reputation but I was impressed (especially compared to the other tuners I went to).


I'll likely make a return trip if/when I can figure out what is limiting my power.
