MSPNP9697 ignition upgrade
Looks like I blew out my second stock coilpack on my '97 project 1.8L Miata with an unmodded MSPNP9697. The engine is naturally aspirated til we get the bugs worked out, but it'll be 300+whp when the turbo goes on, so the stock ignition is probably a weak link anyhow.
I was checking out LS2 coil upgrades -- very slick work done here: https://www.miataturbo.net/showthrea...2+installation But the IGN-4 coilpack from DIY Autotune looks like a great, cheap coil upgrade: http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/d...kit-p-387.html Can a MSPNP9697 directly fire this IGN-4 coilpack or does it need the BIP373 upgrade just like a DIYPNP? http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/d...kit-p-387.html |
You'd need BIPs or another ignition module - you'll burn out the MSPNP's transistors if you wire an IGN-4 to it directly.

Why not run COPs? Because of 300+ whp goals?

So I bought a set of LS2 Yukon coils and plug wire + ends (to make my own plug wires), but I neglected to buy any LS2 coil connectors (like this)... and I'm confused about the wiring. Is there an adapter harness (either custom or, hopefully, pre-fab) that goes between the coils and the factory coilpack connectors? Or should I snip off the factory connectors and splice on longer wires and LS2 connectors (maybe an LS2 wiring harness would be good for this)? Or should I run wires all the way back to the MS ECU?

I bailed and took this project to DDMWorks, a great speed shop that's local to me. They fabbed a stout bracket to mount the coils in nearly the stock location and fabbed up a coil harness that plugged into factory -- no splices! It's stealth enough that you might not notice it's a custom ignition if you aren't familiar with Miatas. Runs great, very happy with the quality of work, and can't wait to get the turbo installed! :D
