I have a 94 miata I just bought. Its got a megasquirt pnp ecu and i'm trying to connect to do some datalogging/tuning and I can't get the Windows Vista computer to connect to the ecu. I've downloaded the drivers for my serial to usb adapter and it still won't work. Since I'm new to MSPNP is there anything special I need to know? Thanks

Try a code check. To do this check, you'll need the program portcheck.exe, which comes with most MegaTune versions, including the one on the DIYAutotune.com website. You'll find it in the MegaTune2.25 folder. If you don't have a copy, download it here:

Power up the Megasquirt and connect it to your PC. You do not need to open the case and should not put the boot jumper in place for this test. Close MegaTune if it's running, and run the portcheck.exe program. When this program starts, it will scan the available COM ports.

If the port it's scanning is not connected to a working Megasquirt, or it's on the wrong speed, it'll say "No connection made." If it's on the right port and right speed, it will give you the version of the Megasquirt firmware that's on the Megasquirt. Note that some Megasquirt firmware versions will look like earlier versions with this test - for example, 029V identifies it as 029Q. This is for backwards compatibility.

If you get a port where it replies with "S" or something else that doesn't look like a firmware version, this port is probably a fake COM port that echos back everything that's typed.

So I ran the portcheck.exe and heres what it said
COM3 opened
9600 baud
"s"ing 's'
115200 baud
"s"ing 's'

1 valid port found

hit return when done...

So how do i check other ports? What do i need to do.

Looks like COM3 is a fake diagnostic port. What COM port is your USB adapter using?

At the time I was testing it it was in com port 8 according to the device manager. It changes based on which of the 4 usb ports I use on my laptop....no matter which one I use it doesn't seem to recognize it.

Yeah, with help from Matt at DIY I got it all working....even other issues I was having....great help.

Here is an email from Matt that I got that helped me figure out my com port stuff.
"I saw your post on MiataTurbo, and I think you may have the wrong COM
port on your USB adapter. To find out what port the USB adapter is
using, first make sure the adapter is plugged in and its light is on.
Then right-click My Computer and select Manage. Select Device Manager at
the left, then scroll down the right hand column until you find the
entry that says "Ports (COM& LPT)". Click the plus sign next to it. You
should see an entry that looks like "USB Serial Port (COMx)" where x is
the number of the port it has grabbed.
If it's grabbed a port number higher than 10, I recommend changing it to
a lower number. Double-click the USB Serial Port item. Then select the
Port Settings tab at the top of the box that pops up and click the
button marked Advanced. You will see a new screen where you can specify
the COM port number; set it to a number less than 10 that is not already
in use. Then click OK to close that screen, and OK to close the
Properties box. This will set your USB adapter to a lower port number.
Let me know if this improves things."
