MX5 Turbo 1990 MS1 Lean AFR (Air leak???)
#22
Okay well I have ordered a new gasket, some vacuum hose and some heat sheilding which should be here in the next few days, from what we have checked there is no more leaks in the piping just the exhaust leak now, as the car no longer sounds like its strugling to idle like it was before with the air leak its smooth but just surging a bit between 1000-1100rpm and the obvious lean AFR.
So hopefully the new gasket solves the issue.
Also if I have the manifold leak that means the car will have more boost once its fixed so should be a interesting test drive once its all fixed...

I would check into options if you haven't already to have the manifold resurfaced for a true flat fitting. That plus the gasket would completely seal the exhaust up and possibly prolong the life of the replacement gasket. Less likely chance of you ending up with the same result.

The gasket I have ordered is from autolink who do a ton of spares for the MX5 and there parts are pretty decent from what i have heard: http://www.autolinkmx5.com/exhaust-m...6-mk1-71-p.asp

Awesome!

Just hoping this is the last hiccup with the build so it can run right finally, cause you always have some sort of issue with builds like this it never goes 100% perfect first time but its dam frustrating.
Then ill prob be running the car and focus on some of the body work until later down the road Ill get my hands on another long nose block and forge it.
Also I have a MS1/Extra by reverant would i be able to connect my clutch switch up and use launch control? or is this only availible on MS2+?

Fitted a new gasket, no more leaks now but still have the same issue with high AFR and it still sounds like it is miss firing on idle every now and then but if you rev it up its fine no miss fire or hesistation.
The only thing i can think of doing next is using a smoke tester and checking for any leaks I cant see?

As for the misfiring @ idle, what is it in terms of quality.. bad idle, good running when it's started cold vs hot? Have the injectors been looked into as an issue?

If the car is having a high idle & high AFR I'd check for vac leaks. The high AFR alone could potentially lead to other things like a sensor, or tuning issue if the megasquirt is causing the high AFR.

If you start it when its cold it will die without throttle and if you start it when its hot it will idle fine but thats with the IAT disconnected as i have never run it with the IAT connected as it runs to lean.
Should be going down the garage in a few hours.

Okay i have not managed to get around to smoke testing the engine today as no-one has a smoke tester until tomorrow.
However i have been thinking and I may have come up with something that might be the cause of the issue. When i bought the engine the IAT sensor wire had just been cut and i was simply given two halfs of the wire to solder back together.
By be soldering the two wires back together i could have created resistance and inturn effect the IAT sensor?

So not exactly a idiot... Idiot.
As for autotune i did run it tonight just to see how it would react and im 100% certain there is a leak some where but I wont no for sure until tomorrow like I said.
When i was running the autotune it was as if it was fighting something and it couldnt level its self out, the AFR reading were constantly up and down.

Every car will run a slightly different fuel pressure, have different throttle percentage values, different idle air control valve values, different oxygen sensor voltage and resistance values in every different car you put it in, and more. Please continue.

You realize that having different wiring already makes a giant change between how an ecu responds/controls everything right?
But you're still thinking that a replacement exhaust gasket will solve your problems so I guess I already know the answer, as well as your intelligence level.

And not really but it was a issue since it was leaking and had to be replaced and in dianosis its a process of elimination anyone with half a brain cell would know that.
