Need Help Navigating TS and Uploading a Base Tune

I recently purchased a DIYPNP megasquirt ecu for my 1997 Miata.

I have successfully updated the firmware to 3.2.5 using the 12v adapter plugged into the wall.

I plug in the ECU into the factory location and everything seems kosher, i.e megasquirt recognizes it's plugged in.

What I'm struggling with is how to upload a base map. I sourced the base may from DIYAUTOTUNE for a 97 miata and cannot successfully save the .msq settings to my tunerstudio.

I constantly get a warning from tunerstudio saying ECU definitions do not match. I have read about .ini files but have no idea how to locate them or extract them to tunerstudio..

For the most part my setup is stock. I have a m45 charger but have removed the belt until I can get the MS setup.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

you can't use or open an msq that was created for different firmware.
either go back to the appropriate firmware or create your own msq.

ignore that warning.

/thread.

I tried this and my megasquirt freaked out. Only way i could solve it was re installing the firmware.

Braineack 07-27-2013 09:09 AM

the basemap wasn't made on 3.2.5 probably 3.2.1, maybe earlier.

so the warning is simply saying, "hey, this map is old, bro"

you ignore the warning. make sure all the settings are still correct. and move on with life.

Uhggg.. After messing with settings in tuner studio and creating my own .msq to the best of my ability I'm still getting no life from the motor.

I just discovered the test mode in tuner studio and cannot get the fuel pump priming, injectors to fire or the coils to charge.

I'm also not getting any tach signal on crank attempts.

I don't think I fried my coils since the car will run with the stock ECU plugged in.

Not sure where to go from here...

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get any closer to starting the car with the megasquirt.

I was previously thinking it may have been a wiring issue because of the previous owner installing a power card and knock box. I was able to successfully remove that mess and get the car running great on the stock ECU.

I'm now thinking I may have an internal issue with the MS, or maybe a settings issue?

I tried test mode in MS and I wasn't able to get any outputs working at all.

I snapped some photos of the MS. I'm running this on a 1997 miata.

that's not setup for a 97 miata. i can see that right away. Looks like maybe a 94-95 miata setup.

Well shit, atleast i know the problem.

I'm just a little confused, after visiting this link: DIYPNP Nippon Denso 76pin Unassembled Kit DIYAutoTune.com

It looks like the denso 76 pin should work with everything from 90' - 00'

Could you point me in the right directions so I can correctly modify the board to work with a 97'?

Braineack 07-29-2013 03:32 PM

yes the 76 pin covers the 90-00.

yours is not using the 3rd connector, so it's easy to see it's not a 96-97 install.

Got it, Thanks for the help!

Is it ok to "re-wire" the ecu? de-solder (I HATE doing that) and solder in some new wires to the proper location?

Braineack 07-29-2013 08:53 PM

All you need to do is rewire the connector board. Heat up pull up. Ezpz.

Update: I finally got the car to run, well, kind of!

She fires up but only on two cylinders and only works intermittently.

I'm also having issues calibrating the TPS. I'm only getting a reading when the throttle is NOT depressed and a big 0 when the throttle is to the floor.

Also when in accessory mode, if I depress the throttle at all I can hear the fuel pump shut off.

I'm guessing my novice soldering work is to blame. but I have no clue whats going on with the TPS...

Do these need to be jumped on my setup?

You only have two INJ outputs, so you need to make sure you've paired them correctly.

double check you put TPS SIG and 5vref in the correct spots.

no.

lyodakin 07-31-2013 12:31 PM

May be a stupid question but I just want to be sure.

TPS = TPS SIG? >> 3F if following the schematic

VREF = 5vVREF?? >> 3L if following the schematic, or is that 3I? oops..

I only see a vref and the 5v pin doesn't go to anything on my board.

I think i paired them correctly. I can take some pictures tonight.

lyodakin 07-31-2013 08:23 PM

Ok i've fixed the TPS. Appears as though I wired it incorrectly.

Now I'm not getting any spark. I double checked the ig1 & 2 outputs and they appear to be in the right place.

Not sure where to go from here.

The car still runs fine on the stock ECU and no luck in test mode.

lyodakin 07-31-2013 08:43 PM

HA, I'm retarded. I accidentally unplugged the coils instead of the o2 plug.

Unfortunately it's still running on 2 cylinders.

I suppose I'll try to re-flash the firmware, I'm not sure what else to try..

I also changed the ig setting from IG1 to WLED and it still fired up on two cylinders. Not sure if that means anything.

lyodakin 08-01-2013 01:21 AM

Tried a reflash, same result.

Also tried flashing a different .msq right from diyautotune and same result.

Pictures coming tomorrow. Any help is appreciated!

Braineack 08-01-2013 07:20 AM

I'm looking for the post that says you've confirmed you were getting spark on all four cylinders but fuel on only 2 or vice versa...
