NEED HELP with TPS not working.

The car, 99 10AE with Reverant built MS3PNP. EFR6258 turbo on a built 94 block with VVT head, blah, blah, blah......

Car has run great for 6 months. After I installed my flat top intake and Skunks TB I have a check engine light. In TS it looks like the TPS isn't working, no signal is coming back from the TPS? So after a little testing this is what information I have.

I don't see how the new manifold or TB have anything to do with anything?

The TPS wasn't working so I tried another used TPS I had and it seemed to work fine when the harness was unplugged from the Skunks TB that was on the car and plugged into the the spare TPS. After installation of the spare TPS on the TB it didn't work. Tested fine through about twenty cycles in my hand, once on the car nothing.

Checked all the wiring. Didn't see anything obvious. Tried pulling and wiggling the wires while cycling the throttle to see if I had a short in the harness but could not get it to work. Then I checked voltage at the factory harness ECU plug and the voltage seems to act as expected. 0% throttle shows .42V and full throttle shows @4V.

Something of note, if unplugged from a TPS the signal wire shows .15V. This goes to .01V when plugged into a TPS that is not connected to a TB. That seems weird to me?

I suspect there is a problem with my MS3 but I have no idea where to begin with that!?!?!?

Please share your ideas and thoughts.

Disable the TPS sensor check and see if that fixes it. More likely than not, the new TB forces the TPS to be a little more closed than on a normal Miata TB, and that triggers the CEL which deactivates the TPS.

I don't understand? Disable the TPS where? how can it run like that? Can I mill out the mounting wholes on the TPS so it mounts more like a stock setup?

That makes sense why the TPS on the car will work for one cycle after I check the one in my hand. How can I fix that?

CAN Bus/Testmodes -> Check Engine Light -> TPS Check: Off.

That seems to have fixed it.
THANK YOU Dimitris!!!

Hey, I don't joke when I say best support ever or your money back.

Amellrotts 05-13-2014 05:09 PM

You have certainly gone way above the standard when helping me! I could not ask for more....

Did I just turn off my CEL completely? It use to come on if I started to get hot but now it does not?

Reverant 05-18-2014 02:34 AM

Hopefully you only switched off the TPS check, not the entire CEL. Post a screencap of your settings.

I don't know how to save a screen shot from TS? So here is a crappy pic from my phone.

Nope, your settings look good.

The MS3 doesn't throw a CEL if you overheat though.

Amellrotts 05-18-2014 09:22 AM

Ok. I thought I remembered that the CEL came on if it got over a certain temp. My mistake. I guess when I kept getting the CEL light it was because of the TB/TPS issue. Well, I have some mechanical issues to fix before I worry too much about tuning......fml

That only happens on the Enhanced MS2.
