Need help with tune

2 Attachment(s)
Hi guys!
First let me say that I'm fairly new to this, from a tuning perspective at least. Let me catch everyone up to where I'm at in my progress on my Miata, (to provide a little background) and then state my situation.

I started modifying my low mileage (6k when I bought it 3-years ago) 2003 Miata Shinsen Version mid last year. I was a mechanic in the Army (26 years ago), so it didn't worry me so much as long as it was wrenching on something. I've also been in IT for the last 22 year so the idea of using a computer to improve my car's performance didn't bother me as much but there was more trepidation than with the wrenching part, but I went forward anyway.

So, I started with a oil filter relocation kit and the sorts, then moved to the Flyin' Miata turbo kit with the piggy back, then to the MS3 Pro PnP, and then some RX8 injectors. All with lots of research, reading herein and miata.net, and Youtube's. Greg Peters, and Pedxing's videos helped immensely as well as the blogs and if it wasn't for this site, I'd never have gotten it up and running. That all said, I've hit a knowledge barrier point that I'm having trouble resolving a few issues.

Setup:
  1. Management:
    1. Megasquirt MS3 PnP Pro
    2. Innovate PSB1 Wideband O2 and Boost Gauge/Controller (currently have this managing the MAC Boost Controller)
  2. Turbo / Engine:
    1. Flyin' Miata's GT2560R Turbo Kit including Intercooler
    2. FM's 3-inch Cat
    3. RX8 injectors (bought from O'Reilly's and confirmed Denso and spent way too much $ on them to be Chinesium)
Issues:
  1. VVT doesn't seem to be working as expected
  2. Knock at 150kpa/4500 RPM WOT -- fortunately, thanks to some posts here for how to do it, I was able to setup the mitigation configurations to keep anything bad from happening. man that jerky cutoff scared the crap out of me while driving at night. lol
  3. Running too rich and too high of RPM at idle -- I keep working on this and have seen some improvements, but I can't seem to zero in on the right formula
  4. and a slew of other, but more minor things
Constraints: I'm sort of limited in how I can tune. I live in the North Georgia Mountains, so there's not many flat spots to use the autotune feature without undue variances in conditions. That said, there's a few spots that I can go a quarter mile or so and not experience too much elevation change, but that's about it, and it's a US highway. backroads are my preferred spots and at night while traffic is near zero and our small town's deputies are at low enough numbers to not be of concernAny help you guys can provide, and or links to things I might not have seen already, would be greatly appreciated.

I'm at work, so I give you a very quick assessment:

If you're NOT on E85 or some very high octane blend, pull 3° timing above 120kpa in every cell.
Richen those cells from 74-124kpa up by 0.5 to 1 point.

93 octane…. I should have mentioned, and you’re absolutely correct, nothing like E85 or something of the sort. Will make the adjustments and report back tonight. Thank you!!!!

Updates:
  1. Knock: Pulled timing for 120kpa by 3* and richened by .5 as prescribed. Still getting knock.
  2. Idle: Still seems to be a mess (Idle Hunt). I checked the timing with a light, and it's good. Will keep working on it.

Awesome! Will email you tomorrow.

more updates.
  • Knock -- knock-in at idle is between 8 and 10. I drove it prior to these changes and did get knock-in higher than what is comfortable… peak reading of ~42. I retarded the engine timing another degree to -6 on the wizard. There’s more to that story as I’m using FM’s adjustable timing wheel which is a slider type of wheel.
    • The injectors are definitely over taxed as well showing ~600+cc peak duty which I imagine is leading to the knock readings increasing. I'm not quite sure why this is. When I did the sizing calculations, using power goals of 240 HP, and reading other posts here on MT.net, It would seem that the Yellow RX8 injectors were fit for purpose. Thoughts on this?
  • Idle -- is a lot better now after more tweaking. Could be better but isn’t idle searching so bad now and it seems to be handling AC cycles to a tolerable level (for now).
  • VVT -- just wasn't configured correctly. Got it configured tonight, well, most of it since the instructions on https://bartuneengineering.wordpress...l-setup-guide/ for the Max value didn’t seem to fit the experience... Specifically; " 13. Hold engine speed above 3000rpm and increase VVT duty (%) in 5% increments until the VVT angle no longer moves. Set the maximum VVT duty (%) to 10% above this value". While performing this action, and once above the minimum, it goes straight to full angle and stays there until 100% duty. I've seen other mentions that would leave me to believe that others have had similar experiences so I'm not sure how one could observe the, "No longer moves" part in order to set the value based on that.

more to come…
