tried searching, but couldnt really find what i needed

im looking to get into the MS game, as cheaply as possible. I dont need anything fancy like launch control, sequential injection etc,
my setup will be:
stock 1.6
460's
no AC/PS
begi log mani
godspeed gt28
8psi
edit: AIT and intercooler piping
(am i leaving anything important out?)
I want to utilize my AC fan to aid in cooling, but im pretty sure I can just rewire them, and dont need to worry about it as far as MS is concerned correct?

so I was looking at this kit:

it didnt have much info on it, but i know I will need a harness adapter (boomslang?) or I will need to also order a DIY harness from them as well,
but is there anything else I will need/anything I may be over looking as to why this might not be my best choice?

You need an AIT sensor, harness, fan mod, and I think one other mod I can't think of. Coolant sensor? It's been a while and I didn't even build it.

boomslang is only if you're running parallel to your stock ECU. Which you shouldn't.

as cheap as possible would be an MS-I on a v2.2 board with a custom harness. Using the DIYBOB is the easiest, but not the cheapest method.

You dont need the a/c fan to aid in cooling. Honestly a good cooling system doesn't need any fan at all but in traffic.

regardless, to control it independantly you'd need to add another output relay or wire it to activate with the main fan.

you need to add the idle control mod kit and that's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

and I would run an AIT sensor...unless you keep the AFM/MAF in tact

sorry left out I already have ait that came with intercooler kit, fixed

with the third choice (its more similar to the one I had in mind) I guess I would just need to source a stock miata harness, and splice them together? Im doing this on my DD so want to be able to do as much as possible ahead of time, then when the time comes, just unplug stock ecu, plug new stock ecu in with as little downtime as possible

by fan mod, you mean ill need to modify my fan wiring, or ill need to purchase an additional component for the MS?
edit:nvm i was typing this before I saw your comment brain

so in addition to my posted MS (which i believe is what you suggested, MS1, v2.2) and making a harness, ill need idle control component, and just forget about fan?

what does the DIYBOB offer me? just an adapter to let me plug my MS into the stock harness? which one would I need? how many questions can I ask in a row?

No he means the fan mod kit. you dont need it, use the middle LED circuit to run fan control.

To control the a/c fan indenpendatly, you would need to add an additional driver circuit to activate the a/c relay (which turns on a/c fan). or just wire a/c fan to main fain.


Go with the DIYBOB for the wiring harness.

why the wire bundle vs. the pigtail harness? I dont mind spending a little extra, for a little less work, just cant afford to pay for a preassembled PNP unit, and my dad (EE nerd) seemed eager to help me build an MS so thought i might finally dive in.

they are color coded. I'd rather spend $15 on color code wires that are ready to go, than to spend $5 on a spool of 18g wire that i have to cut to length and then strip and the hope to god I dont have to trouble shoot later because I put them in the wrong spot or the $45 of the premade one, on something you can easily do yourself.

the MS kit comes with the DB37 connector ready to solder up on your own...no reason to go hog wild with the premade one. it only takes about 5-10 minutes to populate yourself.

so to see if I have this right, one side of DB37 connector is permanently affixed to the MS board, the other side of the DB37 plug will be wired to the board of the BOB, which is then plugged into the stock harness?

MS>DB37female>DB37male>wire>BOBmale>stock harness Is that what you meant by "it's worth it for the ease and upgradability" meaning if I ever move to a MS2+ I can just reuse my adapter harness? makes sense.

any chance you have a DIYBOB/harness wiring diagram you can vouch for to be correct? I found a build of one, but it is referenced by wire colors, rather than what the wires are labeled for, so Im not sure it would be the same colors. any references to what you use when you make them? thanks alot

What year car? There are ECU pinout diagrams over on miata.net in the garage section, however until you try and fire up the car for the first time unless you spend some time buzzing out the loom you can't be certain that any given diagram will 100% match your car.
