No start on first start attempt

Hey guys, So i just tried to get the ms3x setup in my car (1990 1.8 swap) and when i tried to start it, it just cranks. I have fuel pressure so i think it may be spark related. I haven't deleted the afm yet and just have the 1.6 tps disconnected. I've changed the required fuel to the 1.8 injectors, calibrated all sensors but even after calibrating my wideband i still just see a reading of 10 on the tunerstudio gauge. I don't know if if theres something i'm missing but any help will be appreciated!

Is the wideband also showing 10? If not then you have the wideband calibration settings wrong in TunerStudio, or your wiring is incorrect.

That aside, the wideband not working shouldn't affect the ability to start.

No the wideband is at 22, so i definitely have a problem there. Thats what i figured as well.

Any luck testing spark with Output Test Mode?

I'm not exactly familiar with tunerstudio whatsoever (zero experience) so no i'm not sure how to go about doing that.

Well, it could be fuel, spark, timing, or compression.

1) First, make sure you have the fuel feed & return lines plumbed correctly. I did it backwards and it was annoying to diagnose, yet very obvious once I spotted it.
2) Get a mechanic's stethoscope from harbor freight for like $3. Use it in conjunction with the injector diagnostics tool in MS. It's in the dropdown on the far right.
Injector and spark sequence should be:
A-1
B-3
C-4
D-2
(in MS, the injector/ignition drivers are labeled A-D).
Injectors will click. Put the mechanic's stethoscope on each injector and test them one by one to make sure that A) they are firing, and B) going to the correct cyl.
3) Now test spark. You can either put a timing light on the plug wire & see if it flashes when you use the MS spark test tool, or just pull the spark plug & ground it against the head to see if it's sparking.
4) Your timing could be super jacked up. I think you can check timing so-so while cranking. Correct with timing wizard if it's way off of the crank timing as set in MS.
5) Check the "composite logger" under the MS high speed logging/diagnostics tool to make sure you are getting cam/crank signal. You have to start a log & crank for about 20 seconds before anything will show up. Lack of signal would indicate a problem with your CAS or your cam/crank sensors depending on what 1.8 engine you're running.
6) Check compression.
7) Hate life if you got this far & still can't get it to start.

Ok, well i already have the engine running and driving on the 1.6 ecu so i can be relatively certain i have spark and fuel. I think i'll start with the output tests and checking for cam/crank signal.

Could the issue be caused by running everything with the 1.4.1 firmware and the base map for 90-93 cars on trubokitty or is that still to date?

wackbards 06-17-2017 09:04 PM

Did you change your injector size and displacement under basic settings? A 1.6 map would be set up for 1.6 injectors and 1.6 displacement. Your req_fuel calculation will be wrong if you don't put in the correct values for the 1.8 motor.

Yes i changed the required fuel to match the 1.8 injectors.
I just tried to test for spark with a timing light and i'm not getting any signal from any of the plug wires. Now to figure out why i'm not getting spark.

While cranking i also don't have an RPM reading and in the gauge screen of tunerstudio i have a little red "not RPM synced"

What's your spark mode set to in your ignition options? If you're running a CAS, I think it should be 4g63.

Yes i have it set to 4g63 already.

Looks like the potentiometer on R52 on your ms3x needs to be cranked counterclockwise 7-8 times. I've never had a ms3x, but a Google search will point you in the right direction.
