Normal spool for a 1.6?

2 Attachment(s)
I've recently had my newly turboed miata tuned, it's a 1.6 with a top mount kraken manifold, 3" dp and a Garrett 2560r. I still have a few issues with the tune, but the tuner didn't have very long and just kinda fitted me in where he could. So it's fine and driveable but I wanted to get some opinion on my spoolup. I know it's a bigger turbo on a little engine, but looking at the sticky it looks like my spool might be a bit on the slow side.

4th gear pull:
2200: 0.0
2300: 2.1
2500: 3.4
2700: 5.1
2900: 5.8
3100: 6.7
3300: 7.3
3500: 7.9
3800: 8.5
4000: 8.8
4200: 8.9

I had to let off the gas at that point, in 3rd it reaches full boost around 11psi at 5440rpm. That's not to say is isn't a blast to drive, I'm just curious as to whether this is a normal spool up with my setup or whether it could be better?

I've uploaded the log, I'm new to this so if I'm not logging correctly please let me know. I've attached the current tune too.

Anyway, thanks for any thoughts and expertise, this is all new to me and don't know whether I'm looking for problems where there aren't any! :)

Are you running stock wastegate canister? No boost controller?

Stock is a 7psi canister, which you hit at 3200rpm, rest is boost creep, 11psi at 5400rpm is creep, not spool

I'm running an ebc yes, tuner is using it to limit it to 11psi.

11psi at 5400 is super slow boost.

Either your ebc setting are messed up or you have a boost leak

Looks about right to me. Find an equivalent 1.8 setup and multiply the spooled rpm by 1.8/1.6 as a sanity check.

Plus there should be lots of gt2560 1.6 dynos out there.

That's pretty lousy spool and overall output.

:( weeell crap!

Check for boost leaks, see what messing with EBC gets you as long as you have faith you aren't going to ping to pieces.

And then actually rev it to a normal rev limit. 6200rpm is a great way to make a small motor feel even worse.

I guess I'll check for leaks first, not comfortable with messing with the ebc at the moment. As for only revving it to 6200, I'm still getting used to driving it turboed, it's a different beast than the one I used to have. Still building my confidence that it's not going to explode on me! :)

i would not call 226hp and 200tq on a 1.6L at 11 psi lousy output. sounds about right to me.

I'd be interested to see what spool looks like in open loop. I feel like your bias table is a little on the conservative side. Was open loop tuned before closed loop was activated?

I don't know, I took the car to the tuner on pretty much a base map. But he didnt have a lot of experience with Miatas (mainly deals with Corvettes), but I can certainly ask him.

certainly feels a lot faster than it did ;).

I guess you are right that 226 at 11psi is expected. The area under the torque curve looks as miserable as an underspun rotrex, though. I'm trying to identify how much of the problem is 1.6 and how much is something else.

It's only fun between 5500 and 6500, lol.

Lol, it does actually feel just like driving a rotrex, the acceleration just keeps building up the rev range, there is no sudden boost.

Ok, so is that indicative of just a larger turbo on a little engine, or is it in the tune (or a leak?). I'm new to all this so not sure how to figure this out.

That looks really slow. It took me months to chase out all the boost leaks. Wastegate preload also has a pretty dramatic effect. For reference here is a plot of spool on my 1.6L with the T3/T4 churbo from the MKTurbo kit. One of my boost leaks was through the cheap BOV, so moving to a real GReddy made a big difference. At 13psi I was making 205 whp on a Mustang dyno.

I have the Turbosmart Kompact blowoff valve from FM, so I would assume that it was a pretty decent one. However, were the AIT connects to the silicon tubing could well have an issue, I think that might be my first place to check. I have the silicon intake tubing from FM as I liked the idea of having as few connections as possible.

I have noticed that my pod gauge only ever reads up to 0psi, never actually shows positive boost, whilst the MS as you can see does. I ran a line to MS and tee'd off of that to the boost gauge, so I would have thought they would show the same thing, but I guess something is screwed up there.

That's a proper chart shape for a turbo 1.6

Yep, if it ever stops raining here, I'll be looking for leaks! Appreciate all your guys help!
