because too much too quickly (more than plants can convert back to O2, especially when trees are being cut down at a rapid rate) creates the greenhouse gas effect.

Is it a spark-ignited internal combustion engine placed into an automobile? Then it needs to get smogged. The only exceptions are Hybrids and NatGas vehicles with a gross weight over 14k.

There's nothing special about "synthetic fuel" that makes it free of harmful emissions. I could build an engine to run on Amsoil and it would pollute the living hell out of everything. And you can generate NOx just as easily with a poorly tuned engine burning methanol / ethanol if you try hard enough. It might be "less bad" than an equivalent gasoline engine in an equally poor state of tune, but present nonetheless.

Thankfully, CA did finally stop issuing "Access OK" passes to hybrids (they capped the program at 85,000) and they actually disqualified all the hybrid SUVs that were getting pathetic mileage despite having a little DC motor in them. :bigtu:

Biggest BOLT-IN hp gain in history of street driven cars. "Hmm.. I think I'll put a 1500hp chopper engine on my car converted from rotary to thrust..."

better watch out where you put your hands on that thing, or you may not have any with where the intake is

How bout that motorcycle owned by Jay Leno that has a chopper engine in it?

Ohhh but that's not exactly a hybrid.

mazda/nissan 12-07-2007 12:41 AM

i prefer the tomahawk myself

but back to the OP, move somewhere that doesn't have smog

In all seriousness, how do I pass California Emissions if I ended up with a Turbo Miata? Does anyone know of any shops in Orange County? I would really need to know if I am going to buy / build a turbo Miata.

Combustion of Ethanol forms Carbon Dioxide and Water... C2H5OH + 3 O2 → 2 CO2 + 3 H2O

Ethane is a hydrocarbon, ethane + 1 oxygen = ethanol. :jerkit:

Besides in North America, personal transportation emissions ~= public transit emissions (which is ok because they are gov't operated) but are dwarfed by agricultural emissions (again these are ok for some reason) of GHG's.

What's a real piss off is the obd2 scan. They are bringing this into Ontario in 2013 (for 98+ vehicles...phew), you automatically fail emissions if the cel lights up regardless if you pass the sniffer.
